witch option for 9" third member?
I was told to get a true track.
I had a Detroit locker in my 71 it did not last long, before I knew it I was doing 1 wheel squealers. You just can’t do that in front of your friends, not in a decked out supercruzer.
Was also told the posi would not be the best choice for the road course. I have a posi unit in the 71 now and I love it. I didn’t notice a handling difference with it.
I think it’s when you come out of a corner hard on the throttle that the posi has a tendency to want to brake loose and go sideways?
Looks like I’m going with a Moser housing and axels…..31 spline….. street nodular iron case, not sure how much HP the aluminum case can hold. Alum. pinion support, ect.
The car is pushing 5 and ¾ at the wheels at low boost but the rear will have to handle about 750rw after I get a forged short block.
Posi?
Detroit locker?
Air locker? (not even sure what that is)
True track?
Other suggestions?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
i've got the
detroit locker but it's only good for drag, but it hold s like a ****.
The truTrac is much more forgiving but still holds well.for road coarse.
An ARB (airlocker) wont live at that power level.... nor will you like replacing the 'umbrella seals' as often as you will.
There is nothing wrong with a Locker on a road course, there are plenty of them out there and they have been used in road racing since the middle 60's without many problems. With your previous statement, I guess you havent found someone that will set it up correctly for you ?
A True Track or a Diamond Track are really your only choices from there at the described power level with a 9" center section.
An alloy case will hold up just fine..... if you can find someone that has had enough experience with them to set it up correctly for the intended application. I have put them in various chassis with more power to the ground than what you have described and havent had any problems with them, set up the right way.
Another option you have is to run an alloy 12 bolt center section with an Eaton limited slip with the 800lb preload. Not only is it tunable but it is rebuildable and its the strongest thing out there next to a Detroit Locker..... plus its street and parts friendly..... and a 12 bolt pinion centerline is more efficient than that of a 9".
If you want something done right, look to shop that actually has high standards.... someone like Mark Williams maybe ?? Or a independant builder like Pro Gear or Tom's Differentials or Hughes Differentials in San Diego..... and if your not happy with one of them, call me.
But if you were going to run a 9" center section.... and it was up to me..... I would run a Torsen TBR . IMO, there is nothing else for a dual or triple purpose chassis especially with the amount of street use you have stated.
