Default need some suggestions new gears/posi howling

i just had a used torsen and a new set of gears installed. my mechanic told me that the previous owner tightened the ring gear down too hard which caused it to be uneven and have a .005 runout ? i get a howling sound comming from my rear now around 45mph which sounds louder at decel. is there anything i can do to fix it or does it really need a new posi unit ? thankyou

well...if somehow it did get distorted like that, you're going to have to replace the ring and pinion since they're Fed.

The posi should be okay. You would have to tighten that thing down pretty hard to actually cause it to be uneven...it seems more likely that the ring would have been uneven from the factory. The howling is probably pinion bearings...you should consider replacing the bearings in the rear end, and the ring and pinion. Motive now offers gears with a bullet-proof guarantee...

I've got the same situation, GM gears, brand new ring/pinion, bearings. Was fine for 600 miles, then started whining 60-70mph, light throttle. I'm trying to ignore it. I've been mostly gentle so far, but I'm thinking if I hammer on the gears for a while, maybe it will wear in and get better If it doesn't get better, someone suggested to me I try heavy oil s.a. 80W-140 to quiet it down!

If your getting a howl on acceleration and deceleration , Best bet is to have the pinion bearings check for play.
