Re: GM posi additive or not?
If it came with a Limited Slip rear[Zexel Torsen] [Any M6 or A4 with 3.23] it gets the additive !
GM # 1052358 additive
GM #12378261 Synthetic gear lube 75W-90
All Torsens get this period !
Not sure about the Auburn's ?

well for A4's ive heard you dont have to, but i put mind in it for the heck of it.. it surely cant hurt anything... but for the M6 i believe you are supposed to... dont quote me though.. still even if your not, its added insurance

I don't think what type of tranny you have matters. I'm talking about my rear-end

Re: GM posi additive or not?
YES, you need to add it! Even if you're going back with some synthetic fluid that says you don't need it, I would still recommend putting it in. Way back in the day when I still had my T/A, I upgraded to 3.42:1 gears with a girdle and RedLine fluid. RedLine says that you don't have to add the posi additive with their fluid, but that's a bunch of crap. My rearend clunked, howled, and everything in between around corners. I put a bottle of GM posi additive in, and it solved the problem with a little driving.

Re: GM posi additive or not?
I have a '98 and I left out the posi additive to see what it would happen. It made a clicking sound when cornering -- very obvious in parking garages. I added the posi stuff after 1500 miles and the clicking stopped. If you need it -- its not hard to determine.

Re: GM posi additive or not?
If you change your own diff oil, you can tell whether it's a Auburn clutch style diff or a Zexel Torsen:
if you see clutch plates and springs thru the slot you got an Auburn;
if you don't see clutches/springs you got a Zexel;
also, the Zexel does not have bevelled pinions, and the side gears are not bevelled either; goto www.torsen.com and on the Products page go look at the T2 type.
If you don't change your own diff oil, lift the rear of the car (park brake off and in neutral), and rotate one tire; if the other tire rotates same direction you got Auburn; opposite direction you got Zexel (don't worry, the Zexel lets you put down TWO big black tire marks ).
Since the Zexel is all gears (no clucthes) it does Not require the limited slip additive (the GM service manaul and Zexel both say this); it won't hurt to add it, but if you have say Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 gear oil the additive will make no difference (keep it simple).

Re: GM posi additive or not?
I've never used the GM Additive (changed my diff fluid twice now) but I do add an additive. My dads got a bunch of additives for posi made from whale fat (old stuff, back before the tree huggers and animal fruits stepped in)
