Default rear end died..

I had given the 10 bolt rear end way too much credit on these forums in the idea that chevrolet wouldn't have put it on their muscle car if it couldn't at least handle SOME power! Apparently not..

My camaro went in to the chevy dealership for a choppy sound coming from the rear differential. I just found out that the axle is pitted (?) along with various other components. It's going to need a ring gear pinion, axle bearings, front and rear bearings, and side bearings for a whopping $2500.

Yay.

I've only had the car for a couple months and haven't ragged on it at all. It's only 5 years, 55k miles old. Ugh I don't need this ***** right now.

I guess it's time to start saving up for a 9 inch..

GM sucks for putting the crappy 10 bolt in these cars. My 9" is on order right now and I've only got 42K on it...but I must admit I've ragged on it a bit . Couldn't tell from your post if you are going to get it fixed but you might as well bite the bullet and not pay the same amount for the dealer to fix it when you can get a 12 bolt or 9" for the same price.

Good luck!

or just buy another used 10 bolt for $200 or so, until you feel like ponying up for a beefier rear.

why would you pay 2500 to get your 10 bolt repaired? If you have the money and are planning on repairing that rearend i would say to hell with it and buy a 9" or a 12 bolt. Now if you are low on funds just buy a spare used 10 bolt for around 200. I bought a spare 10 bolt and have it on hand just incase! But seriously dont get raped by the dealership!

The axle bearings are pitted?

$2500 is absurd. Get an aftermarket ring & pinion (~$200) also a master install kit including axle bearings ($100) take it to a performance shop to install it ($300) and then drive away with a better gear ratio and a 'new' rear end.

$2500 is an absolute butt-raping. Replacing all of the rear-end bearings costs no more than $500....material and labor. It would cost around $125 if you did it yourself.

I really actually haven't had time to look into other options with replacement 10 bolts and such because I need this car to get around. I live 300 miles from my parents and know half a dozen people who wont drive me around town for a week. It all happened so fast! I thought the noise was from low fluid or something stupid like a universal joint that the tech forgot to tighten when i had the seal replaced a month or so ago. Little did I know it would be a little bigger than I expected!

Where can I find used 10 bolts, by the way? I might need to look into this in the future if this happens again.

2500 to repair a 10 bolt is a complete waste of money, get a 12 bolt drop shipped to your door.
