if you floor it, when does 1st gear end? is it around 37-40mph?
then you have 2.73's
3.23's will be shorter than that.
I have 2.73's and by the end of 2nd gear im doing 80mph. I hate these gears.

Look at the RPO code list on the interior edge of the driver door. Assuming the rear hasn't been touched, you have 2.73 gears unless there is code GU5 listed. If so, then you have 3.23 gears.

This is a simple way to find out.
Mark your inside tire, mark your drive shaft.
with your vehicle lifted and in neutral spin your drive shaft and see how many times your drive shaft spins compared to your tire. Example if your drive shaft spins about 2.7 times compared to your tire once around you would have 2.73's and so on.
I hope this make sence its pretty simple.

If you suspect they may have been changed check the RPM/MPH against a calculator - like www.f-body.org/gears/

There are some strange quotes in this threads about 2.73's and what mph in first and second gear?
I get 50mph in first gear and 95mph in second gear!
That was the same on my 95 Z28 A4 2.73 LT1 also.
If anyone is getting 37-40mph first gear and 80mph second gear they can't have 2.73's?

Although the sticker is in the glove box, it was still better than some of the other posts.
Some of you guys just need to hold yourself from typing.
Open your Glove Compartment, and empty it out. There will be white sticker on the bottom, with rows of Production Number Codes, in A-Z Order.
Skip ahead to the letter G, and if its GU2, you have the worst gears possible, 2.73's. GU5 is 3.23's, and 3.42's I think is GU6, I have the GM Gear Sheet, If I find it ill post it .
Also, cars equipped with 3.23's were given a small tranny cooler.

If your doing 55mph in second maybe your gears have been changed to after market such as 3.73's as you say.
Try using the gear calculator it should tell you what your running without getting under the car
http://www.f-body.org/gears/
There is another way, I think it's see how many turns of the drive shaft it takes to do one revolution of the back wheel.
