How much does a typical gear install cost?
I'm wanting to run some 3.73s with my setup and am trying to budget its install in. If I have it installed by a rearend shop do I still need the install kit? How much do shops usually charge for a gear install? I just want to make sure I'm not getting ripped.

Depends if you bring parts or not...
To do it right you need, Gears, Pinion Bearings (inner & outter) Carrier berrings, pinion seal, axle seals, crush collar, pinion nut, carrier shims, oinion shims, gasket, 2 quarts of non-synthetic gear lube for break in.
Gears are about $160, $200 for the good GM (AAM) gears which dont typicaly whine.
You can buy the parts sepreatly or buy a kit for the rest under $100, but ask your installer first, most times thay have all the parts aside from the Nut, seals and berrings.
Install time takes about 3 hours, so whatever labor is x3, roughly, although I have seen it done in less.
My opinion, everything in total should never exceed $500

i did exactly that last fall when my rear end blew...didn't have the funds for a 9inch at the time...here's what my tally was i ordered the gears and install kit from LM performance (sponsor)
1. SLP ring & pinion, 3.73 gear set $215
2. SLP install kit $113
then i took my rear end out and took it to scott at Driveline Solutions. (another sponsor, since scott lives about 1/2 hour from me, i just took the rear end there)
3. Labor for gear install from Scott@DLS $125
so add those and the running tally is $453...but i ripped my rear end out and delivered it to scott...i would imagine it would be more if you just take it to a shop and have them remove and re-install the rear end! hope that helps you out!

I believe GM buys there gears from AAM, AAM is a company which specializes in drive line components for the automotive industry, some sponcers sell these gears like New Era Preformance. GM is more concerned with making a quiet rear that they dont have to waist money on warrenting rears that are whinny so they make thier gears to be the quietest. Motives I hear are quiet too, all depends on the install, .010 i hear is optimal, .008 and you may get some whine. I have motive 4.10s set at .010 and they have a bit of a whine, i added some friction modifier and they quieted down some. I also hear that because 4.10's are cut the way they are thay can be a little more noisy that 3.73's but I want acceleration, and with a M6 there is no other choice of gear if you ask me, I believe thunder racing offers or offered motive 3.90's
Everyone bitches about these 7.5 rears. Truth is, GM has to make a profit like everyone else. The 7.5 corperate rear was working well for 16 years prior to the birth of the LS1 and they were not going to invest in new engineering and testing of a stronger rear for 4 years, the 10 bolt is fine for a stock car in my opinion, i guess they figure if you are going to take the time to up the HP its up to the customer to strengthing the rest of the driveline, if true, I agree.

i was wondering how long it was gonna take for her to say that lol... if you look at her sticky she has a lot of usefull & correct info though...
Dont forget, a lot of this stuff is matter of opinion, some people have different experiances with different gears in terms of preformance and whine. Here is a post I made once https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axles/503947-anyone-have-4-10-s-dont-whine.html dont forget were all on here for the same three reasons 1) cause we dont like eating rice 2) to learn from othere experiances 3) what else are you going to do durring work hours
