Default new 7.5 compared to old 7.5 rear

i have an older elcamino rearend in my chevelle and was wanting to know if gears in my rearend will interchange with a newer fbodys 7.5. im sure the axle splines are probally different but the actual gears if they are similar. open to suggestions

This might be a dumb question, but what is keeping you from spending $120 on a set of new gears in the ratio of your choice? If you're going to do it, do it right, not with a 30 year old gear set....

The old gears will work even if they have 7.5 stamped on them and the new ones had 7.625 stamped on them.
I'd rather use those than a set of $120 new gears, where do you find gears for $120?

Let me get this right. You have a late model Elco 7.5 in your 70 Chevelle ?? Wow. Never would have seen that comming.... If this is the case, then yes, the late model 7.5/7.625 gears will work as Kelly stated.

Just saying if you are going through the trouble of setting up a ring and pinion, might as well make the install as reliable as possible

Well I wouldn't get them off e-bay then. So if you got a new set from a vendor on here its more like $200.

I wouldn't trust anyone on e-bay. Way to many people gettin ripped off now days. It might say new gears & then you get a rock in a box delivered or some worn out gears. Not worth rollin the dice to me. If you gonna spend the money don't cheap out, just get them from a 100% reliable source.

There are tons of S10's and S10 blazers in junkyards with 3.73 7.5/7.625 rears, you could maybe get a set from there.

I have done a couple gear swaps using Richmond, Motive and stock used gears from another F-body. The Richmonds always make noise, the Motives did a little bit but, the used stock GM gears were as quiet as the car they came out of. And I was always able to use the stock shims over again and hit the gear pattern and backlash dead on everytime. Nothing wrong with old, used gears.
