Carrier Series?????help Somebody????
anyone know a quick way to determine what series carrier your car has? my car is throwing me off..i have a 99 Trans Am a4.. it has 3.42 gear in it but im not sure if someone put them in the place of 2:73 or 3:23 or if it has been changed out with a stock 6speed rear end?? i think it still has the tag on the diff cover if anyone knows what i should look for it would be helpful...i want to try out the 3:90 gear ratio..

If the gear has been changed check the numbers on it. If they are GM gears with GM numbers it will be a 3 series case. If it has richmonds, motives, other call them with the number and ask.

Hey, I am hearing a loud clunk from my rear end when going about 30mph. It also hapends sometimes when switching from 1st to 2nd. I have an a4 2001 ws6 25k. Iherd these beasts have a lose rear end but i think this might be worse. Does anyone know anything about this or could maybe share som insight. Thanks

GM didn't put ID Tags on the rear ends.

GM 342 doesnt mean anything, motive and other comanies put that on just to mark what they are for. You will need the actual part numbers off of the gears to id them.
ANd even if there was a tag, what woukd it tell you if it has been changed? You can find out from the vin what it had, but it wouldnt make a difference.

Look in the glovebox or the door jam for the RPO codes.
GU2 - 2.73. GU5 - 3.23. GU6 - 3.42
That tells you what your car originally came with. Now. If you originally had 2.73's, you have a 2 series carrier. If you originally had 3.23s +, you have a 3 series carrier.
Otherwise you could pop the cover off and have a look....you might be able to get a part number or something to see if the gears are for a 3 series or 2 series carrier.

Since you don't know if a GU6 was swapped for your GU2 or GU5 there is no telling what is actually in there from the exterior of the diff. If you can find a part number on the ring gear this might help ya out:
For a 3.42 Series 2 Carrier:
Motive Gear part # G875342X
Richmond Gear part # 49-0005-1
USGear (Strange Gear) Part # 01-875342X
SummitRacing.com lists them as part # RMG-4900051
jegs.com lists them as part # 836-49-0005-1
also @ jegs.com part # 555-60008
If you have noticed Motive and USGear put an X at the end of the series 2 carrier gear sets, whereas a series 3 will not have the X at the end.
I haven't researched the Series 3 Carrier gear set part number's but it shouldn't be too hard for you to find if you can get a number of the ring gear.
