Not really something I recommend unless you have some gear experience.
Getting the setup right on a gear set is crucial. Pinion depth, preload, backlash, are so important. Get it wrong and you will ruin a gearset in 5 miles, or have the howling pinion bearing from hell. If you have a friend who has done a few and can help, that would really be great...otherwise you might just want to pony up the $250ish and take it somewhere.
Sure if you got stuck you could take the rear end somewhere...removing the rear end isn't hard but it'd be another couple hours of your time you could have saved.

Totally depends. Mine was good for around 250 passes on BFG's and then broke on e.t. streets. I consider myself lucky to have it last so long.
