The steel ones are pretty solid units but the aluminium ones are not all that great.

Only the 2.73 cars where suposed to get the steel ones. 3.23 A4 and the M6 cars should have alum, I would say that you deffinatly do since I've never seen a 2.73 SS. Is your car an M6 or A4? If you don't have the $350 or so for a nice aftermarket unit I would consider a factory steel one.

I used to hear everyone say that ALL LT1 cars have a steel shaft, and ALL LS1 cars have aluminum... But In my experience ALL LT1's have steel shafts from the factory M6 or A4, the LS1 cars seemed to have steel on the earlier automatics, and aluminum on later automatics and all M6's... Though, Ive never worked on or been under a 98 M6 car

Ahh thats it!
All the LS1 cars ive worked on that had a steel driveshaft were not only automatics, but had factory 2.73's... And I dont believe GM ever put 2.73's behind a M6. That would explain why the later year automatic LS1 cars Ive worked on had aluminum, all of those cars had 3.23's from the factory.

All M6s have 3.42s from the factory. All 3.23 cars are suposed to have aluminium but some have reported that theirs have steel. Not sure if some of the 3.23 cars did infact get steel, or the people just didn't know how to read the gear codes.

my buddy sheared his at the track launching at 6k on slicks. he only got away with a few passes on his new 9" before his tore at the rear yoke. i would think only launching hard would rise concerns of strength...but i'm prolly wrong

My M6 came with a steel driveshaft being that it came from the factory without speed rated tires.
