my gears have a whine to them when not accelerating....cause by the momentum turning the diff not the car...or thats what i would believe it to be....its almost as if you turned the motor into a load off of the gears, instead of the other way around....most rearends (from the vehicles i have or had) do this...usually people say use thicker oil to quite it down...im not savvy with diffs tho...im a submarine mechanic not a car mechanic yet

bearings, or bad wear pattern on coast side of the ring gear.

anybody have any idea how much it would cost to get some new bearings put in or if it would even be worth it? Im thinking about possibly just having some 4.10's put in to make it stop so much.

i had my 10 bolt rebuilt fresh with 4.10's and new bearings all over for $600 including gears. you could get yours for around that. add a TA cover too while youre at it.

Decel whine is usually caused by too little preload or improper backlash.

So basically this will eventually kill my gears? Im trying to decide if it is worth paying to get new gears and bearings or just dealing with it and saving up for the 12bolt/9"

Were they quite initially? If so you probably just tweaked the crush sleeve. You could pull the yoke and try a solid spacer and see if the noise goes away. It is something cheap to try. It is also possible that you just bent the teeth on the pinion. As odd as that sounds it does happen. Many 10 bolts start out quiet and after a couple of hard launches the pattern changes and you get noise.

I have had my Moser 12 bolt for 2 years and never beat on it because I have had other issues with the car. Last night I had my first race and by the end it was howling its *** off. It only does it on decel or while coasting, not under load. So I think I will be ok. Anyone ever have a rear go out with this problem?

If it's the stock rearend, and no one has ever messed with it, it's probably just a bad pinion bearing.

My Moser 12bolt has been doing this since I got it. Its normal. If you go to the Moser website and read it tells you that the reason it is louder is because the gears they use have less nickle in them to make them stronger. The push is that stronger = noisier.

Just cause it whines doesn't mean it's gonna break. My Strange 12 howls pretty good, it's been doin that for years. I still beat on it pretty good. If the noise bothers you enough to dump $ into it then go for it otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I second that, a whine during decel is most likely the pinion bearing, if its leaking you'll see a spray of oil above the front of the rear end

Dont you find it odd that the noise is only on decel and the more you beat on it the worse it gets? I have a system in my car that is 147.1 DB and I can hear it over that. I think I will just deal with the noise untill next summer. I wanted to go back to 4.11's anyways.

Mine started doing that after about 1k miles on the 4.10 install. I was told they were not set up right. I asked around after I had a girl ask if my wheel was going fall off.

Mine also has a humming sound coming out of the rear end. It actually does it after about 20mph and goes on. Only difference is that it does it while accelerating and not just decel. Any answers?
