Default detroit locker help reqd pleeeze...

hi,

im new to this forum so I hope Im doing the right thing

Im in need of some advice please, I have a ford 9" diff which currently had a locked ctr. This means I cannot register the car on the street without changing the diff ctr.

Hence I have decided to get a Detroit Locker for it. However, there appears to be a few different kinds, some say 'H case', others say 'B case' etc..

Can someone explain what this means and how do I tell which I need.

Also I have found a couple on Ebay and want to be sure of my info before perhaps buying one from there.

Ebay item # 120036343510

Your advice is much appreciated.

p.s. Axels are 31 spline Moser.

Kind Regards
Phil (pookie) Australia

The regular locker for a 9" is a 187sl17b, that would also be the silent type locker, although they arent really silent.

The H and B prob comes from the type of case it is,carrier bearing size... theres a 15 tooth and a 20 tooth locker...

OK so not having anything to do with diffs etc before I would imagine I would be better to pull my diff ctr out and count the teeth? Then look for a locker to suit?

The one one Ebay I am looking at says 'H case' , but I dont know if it suits mine or not??

Would there be a number or something on the diff housing that would assist?

Cheers

You'd have to measure the carrier bearings with a set of dial calipers to see what case it is...

Most 31 spline carriers have the smaller bearing hub diameter, so the 31 spline locker should be fine. Only the NASCAR lockers have the larger hub with the 31 spline, and some lockers. Your center 3rd member housing will either be 2.89 or 3.06 which will both use the smaller bearing hub, or the 3.25 which is usually for 35 or 40 spline with the larger hub.

ok thanks I discovered mine is the small size.

So does this all mean that the 'H' case will fit mine? Does the 'H' somehow mean 'small' ?

Sorry if I sound annoying but I cant afford to get this wrong.

Cheers

You don't want the H case diff, unless you have an aftermarket gear case with the big 3.25" bearings. The B case is what fits 99.9% of the cases out there.
