Most of your top tier synthetics allready have the friction additive blended in with the additive package. I use Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic. It can be found locally for $ 7 a qt.

Do a search on this as it has been covered many, many times.

A quick list; Schaffer, Torco or Amsoil. I recommend a 75-140 fpr performance use.

The search has been messed up for days, I think it just came back online.

Ooooops.... didnt realize that. Yup, I just tried it and no luck either.

Well, anyway..... I would stay away from a fully synthetic gear oil, they just dont have the shock loading properties that are really required for performance use. Meaning.... driving it like you stole it, drag racing etc, etc. Anything that yields a greater amount of "impact loading." Yes M1 is my 'off the shelf' choice engine oil.... but no where near what I would call a 'good' differential fluid.

I wouldnt just drop any DINO oil into it either.

I like parrafin based oils, for many reasons and the answers have already been explained in previous threads.... and they are kinda long in some respects. So, it either wait for the search to come back up... or... we'll play it again Sam. Since I have been doing differentials as long as it has been, I have tried every gear oil out there and my previously noted list would be a kinda 'in that order' list.

Schaffer ISO9000 '209-A' straight weight 140 is my best recommendation.

Torco 'RGO' multi viscosity 85-140 would be next.

.....And if I did recommend any synthetic, it would be Torco SGO 75-140 or AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-140.

I used to run Schaeffer lubes and they are top notch! I would compare them with any top tier synthetic any day of the week. The only reason I changed was I could not get it locally and had to order and pay shipping. They do offer free shipping on orders over $250 though.

Yeah but he has a 98 like me so isn't synthetic a bad idea. It has the auburn carrier from what I can tell which calls for regular fluid and the LSD additive from GM.

Have you tried starting your own thread? Why don't you just put some 80/90 dino gear oil in there?

I'm interested in this as well.

And when breaking in a rear end, do you need a different type of oil?

I can't find the Schaeffer online, but Torco has a website and it looks like it would be $7 a liter (same as a quart, right?). I'm pretty sure I need 3 qts. for my 9 inch that is on the way. Bob at EPP just said to get any non-synthetic gear oil, but I always want what is best for the car, so I'm checking into this thread.

Do you guys think the Torco 85w140 is a good choice for a street/strip 9 inch car?

What is the advantage/differences between the 85w140 and the 80W90? Just wondering because some recommend any 80w90 dino oil, but the Torco oil recommended is 85w140.

Quick Reply: what rear oil would you recommend?
