3.42, 3.73, 4.10....what are the ups and downs of each? I know it's personal preferance, but what are the tradeoffs of each?

I got a 3.73 and an M6. I have no basis of comparison, but I could tell you that street driving isn't too fun because it feels like I shift as soon as I let off the clutch (even at cuising). But I have great power the whole way through. Sometimes I get lazy and just start in 2nd, it really doesn't wear the clutch mutch more when I do.
So as a DD I would say it's not worth it, but for launching, it's good.

depends on if you have an auto or a 6 speed, if an auto i would not go over 3.73 especially for a daily driver. if 6 speed, 4.10s seem to be the most popular choice. but the 3.73's really do change things alot for an auto. dont know about the 4.10s though

I have had both and auto and 6 speed with gears.
I had 3.73s in my auto LT1, and definetly noticed a big difference. as far as how much you will feel it depends on whether you have a 2.73 or 3.23 stock rear-end if you an auto.
As far as the 4.10s go in my 6-speed. I love them. they feel great. definetly a big gain over the stock 3.42s.

I'm speaking more specificly a m6. is it hard to keep traction with 4.10's? what are the advantages? 4.10's get you to speed quicker, but do they hurt your gas mileage, mileage, and top speed alot? do 4.10's make it harder on the 10 bolt, etc...just trying to get all the bits and pieces I've read over several post in one spot and perhaps get some good explinations.

they will hurt gas mileage but it wont be horrible. the difference in top speed is about ~10 mph i believe

In a 10 bolt the 4:10's will be the easiest to break the rear but also acclerate the car faster.

The difference in top speed is rather pointless in a 6spd car. At 6000 rpms with a 274/40/17" tire you will be going 223mph. Not many people on the planet ever drive a car that fast. BTW the difference in top speed isn't 10mph. FWIW the difference from 4:10s at 6000rpm and 3:73s is 22mph.

In a 10 bolt rear the 3:42s would be the strongest but also the slowest as far as acceleration is concerned.

I've had both auto and 6-speed. in an auto go with 3:73 in a 6-speed go with 4:10.
in the auto with 3:73 i had, i didn't tell much gas mileage difference but sure did feel the performance difference. but i also had a stall.

today i installed 4:30 gears in my 99 6-speed...... hope i likes.........

Depends on your set up . have 2.73s in a roots blown Camaro TH-350 and its perfect .

Rpm limit , Tire height etc . You dont want to have to shift to 5th at the strip .
I have stock 3.42 currently and I drive 85 -100mph on the highway to/from work just so the engine isnt bogging in 6th . One benefit though is leaving 10 till .
