Moser 12bolt gets louder by the month...WTF?
i put a moser 12bolt in 10 months ago, it was assembled before i got it. all i did was bolt it in and install the axles and backing plates. break in was dead quiet, after break in soft whine at high speeds, then month by month the whining got louder and louder. now at 15 mph i hear the f**ker whining loud as hell and anyspeed higher than 15 (my radio barely blocks it out). it whines non stop when drivin...people always ask me if its supercharged lol. the tru trac diff is loose as sh*t and has so much play between the ring gear/diff and axle the f**kin thing clunks everytime i push the throttle and everytime i let off. i think a bearing is goin bad too cuz theres a quiet high pitched whine underneath the gear whine and also when coastin in nuetral. im assuming i need the have the gears set up again w/ a new setup kit and bearings, but what the f**k! $2300 the f**ker should of been done right the first time. im not knockin the parts, moser makes quality rears/parts, but has no f**kin clue how to set them up and install them. what do i do? why does sh*t like this happen lol? is there any rear axle specialist that know what there doin who is located close to maryland? i wanna get the whole thing rebuilt and set up again. (now im gonna go release some of my anger on my punching bag)

performance rear end isnt gonna be as quiet as the 10 bolt.
hows your backlash set? .008? or higher? because if youre around .010+ itll whine more and more the larger you set it.
just turn your stereo up louder.

yours was just a cooperative rear and it was set up very good.
most moser 12 bolts get louder the more you launch from high rpm. as there are numerous topics about that.

na, sumthings wrong, its not set up right, im an audio engineer and i have real good ears lol, and its gettin worse as time passes....from break in to now its gradually been gettin louder and louder...and at this point its extrememly loud. backlash should be fine, if its not then **** moser and their lousy craftmenship lol. for $2300 im not gonna turn my head on it, especially when theres many who have quiet 12bolts and 9inches with a shitload more power and more tracks runs/launches than me, and sum who have had whining but was fixed after it was setup again. im gonna get it looked at and most likely rebuilt, i just gotta find a rear axle specialist close to me. anybody kno of any? thanks for your input tho guys
......and also my car has only seen one run at the track, on street tires, no launch just rolled into it then floored it (i ran a 13.6 @ 111.6mph )

I had the same problem with my moser 12 bolt.
I called them to find out what they would do for me and that got me no where fast I will never buy from them again. And thier tech guy was an ***. If you have a bearing going, get it fixed now before it does any major damage, if the bearing lets loose you could damage the case. The clunking sounds are probably from too much backlash and the whining is the gears. when I opened my rear up it was set up wrong from moser they had the pinon set to shallow and not enouge preload on the carrier bearings. I went from .028 pinon shim to .034 shim (which buy the way is what i put in 99% of the 12 bolts that I have rebuilt) and I had to put I believe .031 more shim in the carrier. I have richmond 4.10s and I now have a very low whine at about 65mph crusing. Where in Maryland are you?

robsmith... have you been to the strip w/ slicks? if so, then the crush sleeve in the rear end has probably lost its tension. may cause bearing failure and gear contact problems. if the noise that bad, the gearset is prolly shot, too. like you said... suck it up, find a good rear end tech and replace the guts. have a solid spacer installed between the pinion bearings next time, and buy an American made high quality gearset.

im in central maryland, northwest of baltimore. 1 run at the track, on street tires, no launch, rolled into it off the line then floored it once i released the clutch. daily driver, not much abuse, just street abuse. yea the tech guy at moser was a ******* dick & played it off like nothings wrong.
the backlash isnt causing the clunk, with the rear cover off, i can turn the ring gear/diff back and forth about 45 degrees without it spinning the axles, alot of play between locking and unlocking.
with the bearings, how will i kno when to get em changed and which ones to change? i dont wanna damage my housing, cuz i kno they wont let me return it....also they might be the wheel bearings, cuz when travelin slowly from 5-20mph the car hops up and down a little like im running over small speed bumps....same with slowing down, kinda like if my tire was oval shaped lol. im def gonna get it rebuilt sumtime soon, with all new bearings, seals, ect., and use a solid spacer, with richmond gears if mine are worn bad. any input? or any axle/drivetrain specialist around maryland?

I'm not sure how the trutrac works but if you can spin the carrier and neither of the wheels are turning like you said, than you posi unit is bad that unit has a worm gear design and that can make noise. if you have the cover off get some paint and pattern your gears and see how it looks the only way for the car to be jumping is that there is either a broken ring or pinon, or the gears in the posi are binding some how. I race at cecil county at least twice a month with the pro mods. I know quite a few people down your way I also race a capitol alot. PM me I'll see if I can get you hooked up with one of my friends down there.

i have the exact same problem. hopefully getting it apart this weekend. when im driving, if i turn hard enough to take pressure off the passnager side rear wheel.... the noise stops. i believe it is the wheel bearings going.
