Default 12bolt rears

Planning on switching to a 12-bolt soon because of the 10-bolt is starting to crap out on me, also has rediculous hi-pitched whining that is overpowering, so I figure it's time to switch.

My question is, how hard of an install is this and what fabrication if any is needed? Will be doing this at home with my father and wanted to know if we would be able to do this by ourselves?

Also, what kind of whine should I expect after installation if any?

i installed my moser 12 bolt in my garage by myself with the rear of the car on jackstands. took me 7 hours to unbolt everything and take the old rear out and to put the 12bolt in and bolt everything back up.

nothing needs to be machined or fabricated if you buy a complete moser or strange 12 bolt. if you buy a moser you will need to take the axles to a machine shop or someone with a press and put on the backing plates then press on the axle bearing and press ring. if u buy a moser u will also need to drive the axle seals into the housing ends will a seal driver and a rubber mallet.

if i remember right u can send your backing plates into strange and they will put the backing plates on and press on the axle bearing and press ring onto each axle, and punch in the axle seals. so when the rear gets to you it is completly ready to just bolt in.

at the time i bought my 12 bolt, moser had a 2 day turn around and strange was something like 4 weeks. with the higher quality of the 2 rears leaning towards moser i purchased according. i also have access to a press and own a seal driver.

all n all you and your father should have no problem doing the install in a day

If I buy the Moser 12-bolt complete would I still have to do the machine pressing all? Preferablly I do not want the traction control and ABS, how would I go by not doing this and is there any way to just by-pass or delete it out?

yes, with the moser rear you have to put the backing plates on and press the bearings and press rings. my car doesnt have tc but has abs and i opted to keep it incase the next owner (if i sell it) wanted it. i dont remember all the stuff about tc and abs but u can call moser at 260-726-6689 they will be able to answer any of your questions. also i forgot to mention i have motive 3.73 gears and the detroit true-trac gear driven posi with 33 spline axles. the more teeth on the ring and pinion the more whine u will get from the rear end.

only reason the 9 inch would be quieter is because the gears are setup differently. the 9 inch is also heavier and ive seen 9 inch rears blow up just like 12 bolts. more than likely if your gears are setup well the weak link is going to be the posi. have a look at this thread

I feel ya! but its just a matter of products available and costs. and for that matter, the Dana design was used by GM, Ford, and Chrysler corp. it was used in most 1 ton trucks 70s-80s.

oh yea... Strange has a bolt in S60 just like the 12 bolts. its almost 300 cheaper than the Moser 12b and 200 than the Strange 12b. only thing i know about t/a failure is the stupid bolt setup that Moser uses. some aftermarket t/a manufacture's wont warranty w/ a Moser housing. Strange's housings use the stock bolt setup and aftermarket or oem bolts right up.

8.75 for the 12 bolt, 9.75 for the S60. the S60 pinion shaft is thicker, also

The 12-bolt ring gear size is 8.875", the S60 is 9.75".

everyone says there cheaper........ there cheaper if you just but the rear end. once you factor in the driveshaft replacement for $200 and up your in the same game as the others and now people are saying the s60 housings are made from a soft material.... for 3k can someone get it right..........

Mopar does not mean F-body. You are looking at the wrong thing.

You can clearly see the difference in ring gear size compared to the 12-bolt, which is 8.875" in diameter.
