Default 10 bolt failure poll

Somewhat curious on whether they really make a difference or not...for everyone who has had a 10 bolt failure involving the gears or locker, did you have a girdle/reinforced cover on the diff? I know some people say it helps, some say it makes no difference, but I'd be interested in some actual numbers.

I don't think they make a difference as I grenaded the last 2 rears I have and I have a TA Cover (that is now useless as a bolt shot right through it).

that is the only reason I had one, cuz it was pretty. and I couldn't pass up the price, free. friend upgraded to a 12bolt and gave away his 10bolt 4.10 rear with the TA cover on it.

When I installed 4.10's in my 10-Bolt, I also threw in a set of ARP studs and a T/A Cover....

When it blew, the 4.10's were fine (paint still shows proper contact) and the caps were in place, but the spiders shot right through the case

Can't say whether or not the cover and studs kept it together, but I'm sure it helped...

I'm gunna weld it into a ghettospool and sell it to someone looking for a complete rear with brakes and gears lol

i had the SLP "AAM" girdle and 3.73's with an Eaton Posi. And the slightest wheel hop destroyed it racing from a role. Gay

Interesting results.

For those guys who upgraded to a 12 bolt or a 9", are you using a similar girdle-type setup on that rear, or just the stock-style cover?

I am about to run to the store and buy 4 new Grade8 bolts and pick up the diff from the shop, they are cleaning it and pressing on the new bearings.
I'll snap some pics of this setup as well as my less than 3K miles Eaton with a sheared off bearing flange.

the only thing useable other than my t/a cover was 1 axle. Sheared the other axle and trashed everything inside the rear. it was at the top of 1st gear, before the shift to 2nd...

BIG BOOM!!

Sorry if this is off topic but its kind of funny the problems I have had with my 10 bolt. Everyone says the weak point is in the 7.5 ring and pinion. I have a jegs set of 4.10's that have had no problems. The first thing to go was my auburn differential which blew to smitherines. I cleaned it out and installed a detroit tru-trac. Everything was working good until last week at the strip when I hooked hard and everything went to mashed potatoes. got it home took of the cover off expecting the worst and all it was was my drivers side axle blew up. Installed new moser axles and a girdle (dont give me **** for building up the rear, I am just seeing how far it will go....) and everything is great.

I will have to run it at the track until I can say more, but it is funny that the weekest point in my rear has been anything but the ring and pinion. Just my experience's I know every situation is different.

The carrier is CRACKED get a NEW ONE from SLP for 100 bucks!.... Believe me mine did the same thing, I later found the hairline crack after shearing off another bolt and sending it through the cover.

Think about it...You are not going to just shear off a grade 8 bolt like that without some other problem. cracked carrier...

Maybe mine was a factory defect rear or something . For a $32,000 dollar car its a disgrace in my oppinion. Who ever made the call at GM to put in these rears should be beaten.
It's still a mystery to me why they didn't use the 8.5" rear instead of the 7.626" one. My ZR2 had the 8.5"...so why the hell wouldn't one of GM's pony cars?

Are you serious??
I just put the darn thing in yesterday. SLP no longer lists the torsen on thier site, but the GM dealer quoted me a price of $120 for one, not sure if that was "my" price or the normal price.

And yesterday I thought I was glad I got off spending only $50.

Oh, and I got that price after I had already got new bearings pessed onto torsen and was checking on the price for the replacement bolts, which they couldn't get.

I seriously doubt cover matters much on a 10-bolt. Its a weak *** 4cylinder/V6 rear end behind a 350bhp V8 (stock) and its JUST GOING TO BREAK! Thats kindof like saying "what brand T-shirt was worn by individuals who suffered fatal gunshot wounds?"

You have weak 28 spine axles/diff, and a 7-5/8 ring gear. It just cant take a lot of power. However, I have heard that a lot of people who DO try to make them take it usually use 12-14 thousands backlash on the gears and run a thick oil. This helps absorb some shock, but its still a bandaid thing and should only be messed with for class rules or something.
