Default preparing for the upcoming 9" questions..

Still getting ready for the upcoming months when I go for the 9"... Right now the car is stock with the exception of it having a borla 3" adjust. catback..As far as gear ratio what should I go with? Right now I have stock 342's, and I'd like to stay in the same fuel economy range, but i'd also like to have it ready for later on when I beef things up with a mild cam, would the 342s still be efficient for a mild-ranged- cam?? I'm going with the Moser 9" w/ full spool (http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com....html?item=148)
but i'm concerned about the drive-shaft in the car (stock), in my opinion it seems to have way too much play in it..It moves in and out while spinning, installing the new 9" would this eliminate the play in the driveshaft, or is this completely normal ??

You need to make some big decisions. What are your goals? Sound like you want a good track car since your going with the 9".

4.10 or 4.11 are usually a good ratio for a M6. I switched to 4.10 from 3.42 and lost 2 mpg on the highway. 26 down to 24. I feel it was worth it.

If your going for best track times you need a gear that will get as close as possible to redline at the end of the quarter mile with out shifting in 5th gear.

I don't think the gears will change the city MPG much if you shift it early and don't run up the revs.

Use this website and do some calculations make sure you have the right gear ratios, axle ratio, tire diameter and redline.

http://www.f-body.org/gears/

One issue you need to keep into account is the effective ratio will change with tire diameter.

Also if you have your rev limiter at stock like me, I need to modify my car appropriately or I will run out of gear. (i.e. putting in Nitrous before a cam. With Nitrous I wll have to shift into fifth unless I raise my rev limiter. I can't do that until I upgrade my valve springs and cam.)

What do you mean the DS moves it and out?

I was wondering the same thing. It should only move in and out when the suspension is going over bumps and moving up and down. Bob

Well, I'd probably hafta take a video for you guys to fully understand, i'm not exactly sure that I can explain it... But, I put the car up on jackstands and let it run 1st gear engaged, and where the u-joint connects the rear to the driveshaft, it forward and back. This maybe normal, but it just seems like its a little excessive...If I had to estimate the length it moves i'd say probably .4 of an inch...My rear is like a ticking time bomb though, which is why i'm going for the 9"..My goals I'm not fully sure of, right now I just have the opportunity to get the 9" and next year I will be deploying and more than likely will not have time to do the rear which is why I'd like to do it now.

Also, how will the 9" do on an eibach prokit? Will that affect anything or cause problems?

As far as mpg goes, going from a 3.42 to something of the 3.70 or 3.89 would I even notice a difference?

Also, this is not going to be a drag strip car, may see the track a few times but not a whole lot and when i'm back from deployment I would like to know for sure that the rear will be reliable so I won't hafta worry about fixing it in the little time i'd have.

What spline axles do you advise? Gears also? I don't plan on the car really having more than 500whp for a while.

if its not going to be a track car I dont advise a spool, it makes it a pain on the street to turn.next off when you have your car on stands is it on the body or on the rear? if you letting the rear hang down your putting the U joint under a lot of stress, the 2 diffrent sides the yoke and the shaft side will be diffrent you might be seeing those 2 diffrent spots? thats what U joint is there for to let if move. next off I dont know about everyone else but I have a borla system on my car and with the 9 inch the rear yoke is right up agenst the pipe, I had to rebend some of it to clear. as far as eibach kit a lot of people already have problems with aftermarket torque arms hitting the floor with a 9 inch, if you lower it it will make it even worse.

I think Lethal93TA is correct on the DS moving in and out if you have the jacks on the frame and not the axle.

If this car isn't going to be a drag car and may only go a few times, I would consider a 12 Bolt. I'm not saying this b/c I have it. I would rather have the S60 but they didn't make it when I bought mine since I like to Drag Race. If you have a 3 channel rear end you will loose the ABS function with the 9" since it only works with 4 channel.

The 12 bolt will be a little lighter and I think you can get it with a tru trac diff which I hear is good. If you change your mind, go with Strange, it has a better design for the Torque Arm mount. The bolts go all the way through from the top just like the 10 bolt. Moser's 12 bolt has 2 bolts from the top and 2 from the bottom. The bottom ones have a tendacy to back out.

I put the jackstands on the frame of the car. As far as not having abs&traction control, i've drove without it for a decent while, so I'm used to that. I figured i'd go with the 9" because i've heard bad things about the 12 whining after launching..Which is what i'm getting away from on my 10-bolt, it's on the verge of blowing up and howls like a wolf at the moon constantly...I can turn my stereo up to 50on the volume and it's still loud...

if your going to go with the 9'' go with the detroit tru trac it is strong and yet very street able. i am putting a 9'' in my car this winter. the axle and housing are sitting on the floor next to my tool box at work. I will be puting the detroit tur trac in mine and i do a lot of drag racing i feel it is strong enough.

I have a 9'' Moser . Quiet as a stock non whining rear ..only a faint howl in 6th every once and a while. Its a beast , sidestepping the clutch on the street not worring about the rear is a great feeling. I originally wanted a spool but I decided to try the Eaton true trac.. works awesome . I went with 4.11's . 7,000rpm with 26'' tires is good for 132mph in 4th . 28'' will go higher .
