Default chipped pinion--what's your oppinion??? PICS

hey guys.....

i just got a new ring & pinion for the second time, and for the second time there is a tooth chipped. below are pics of it. i don't know where the wear pattern is at on the pinion and was wondering if this is a problem area that i should return it for or if i should keep it? i would guess send it back, but not sure. thanks for the help.

-Dave-

Hey Dave. Are these new gears? They should not be chipped at all. Says something about their quality and strength if you ask me.

they are new. the pkg wasn't all that great and seems to have hit the ring gear, but that's fine. i'm gonna see if i can get them to just pick up the pinion and exchange that only this time so it doesn't happen again. it's an FRPP setup which i've always heard is good. not so sure now.

Was it wrapped in foam? Some nomb nut sent me a 4.10 set back in my 10 bolt days just in the big box without foam or packaging and it was fine. Even though they were shashing into each other the hole way here. Must have been hit pretty hard to chip them.

Ford gear I see that, the oval, and the avatar, can't see the chip though. If it's on the ends it's somewhat common. Anywhere in the middle would be a problem.
The gears are machined and lapped in as a set so you cannot send only the pinion back, they need to stay in a set so they both need to go back.

Very common on Ford manufactured gear sets. As you can see the chip is not in any way going to come in contact with the ring gear. If it absolutely bothers you then just take a fine stone on a die grinder and smooth it out.

good info guys, thanks. already spoke to the shop i bought it from in Florida and they want to pick up the whole pkg. like the last set. i told them i'm done with the Ford set and to send me a lightened set of Motive gears which happen to be $20 less to boot! the gears above were wrapped in paper! the Motive gears come in a foam enclosure they said so i shouldn't have this problem again, i hope.

nah, this is the second one i got from them that had chipped teeth. they said that they're just packed really poorly by their Ford perf parts dist. or something. i've got them hooking me up with Motive gears that come in a st'foam container so the ring & pinion can't clank together if the box gets dropped. Holcomb Motorsports is a big name for mustang guys that i've had good dealings with prior to this. the guy i spoke to about returning them even hand wrote "please pack well" on the invoice in the box, so they're cool.

My Richmonds in my 12 bolt has almost the same exact chip when removed from the box brand new. After discussing it with the guys at Richmond (who were more than happy to exchange, I didn't wanna wait) and Randys Ring and Pinion when I bought the carrier they told me to do exactly what Scott and Dragman stated.I have had zero problems since it wasn't in the contact patch anyway.
