Re: broke my bellhousing
No doubt some part of the clutch came apart, this is why these aluminum bellhousings scare the crap out of me with the HP's people are putting through them. Even a scattershield may or may not contain a clutch part spinning at RPM...

broke my bellhousing
WTF??
I made a post last week after I raced a c5 on the highway, and missed 4th gear for 2nd, no big deal, i was right back on the clutch very fast, didnt even see the tack go over 6k.
the next day, I got this grinding as I would engage the clutch, sounded like worn out brake pads (metal on metal), after a little bit it went away.
Then that weekend (sunday) I went to an autocross with my new nitto 555R2 tires (never used a sticky tire) and I noticed the clutch slipping with the sticky tires... the pedal was also a little weak feeling (like half the pressure needed to press it down).
So i say, oh well, time for a new clutch i guess, i got 15kmiles out of this hays clutch, not a whole lot of racing on it (daily driver), but enough i guess.
well, yesterday i recieve the z06 clutch, and today i attempt to bleed the current setup just to see if i got some air in there before I change the clutch........
then i saw it:

seeing a f'n hole in your bellhousing makes you skip a heartbeat, I knew it was probably from when i missed that shift, somethign broke off and went through it- explaining the griding soon after as the pp was probably pushing it out of the bellhousing (its just a guess).
what do you guys think? broke fingers off of the pp? broke off some clutch material, or a spring or something?
I called some dealers, they said there are only 8 that show bellhousings in the us, im lucky there is one about 45 mins away, im picking it up tomarrow. They want $313 for it. too bad the forecast shows for rain this weekend (no i dont have access to a garage )
anyone else see this? my engine is near stock, ive heard of this from dragracers with slicks and lots of power.... but WHY ME??!?!?!!?!?!?

Re: broke my bellhousing
What I'm concerned about is what kind of damage could have resulted? I'm replacing the clutch flywheel, pressure plate, bellhousing, and flywheel bolts. I will inspect the slave and determine if its worth me spending anymore money on it (im at like 700$ spent right now, and broke as a joke).
but if something got thrown off of the flywheel/pressureplate/clutch, that would throw the crank way out of balance? and whatever it was, i think it got lodged into the bellhousing till the pressure plate finally pushed it out, so what could that have done to my engine or input shaft from all the pressure?
I hope there are no other side effects of this....

Re: broke my bellhousing
ls1290, yes i did, a week passed by after the grinding thing that went away, and if you've ever been bit by the autocross bug, maybe you'd understand...... that or maybe i just love doing it that much that i decided to take the risk....
it wasnt till after that that i saw the hole in the bellhousing.... havent driven the car since i saw that, and will only to move it, i plan on starting working on this in an hour or so
no stinkin dealers around here have flywheel bolts or pressure plate bolts, so i have to reuse them (cant let it sit till next weekend, 2 autocrosses then )
not too many things can keep me from an autocross if you havent noticed already.....

Re: broke my bellhousing
by the looks of the hole in the bellhousing , i would say the pressure plate bolt came loose or broke and shot out . you might want to check the flywheel and make sure the threads are ok where ther bolts go in.

Re: broke my bellhousing
well, just spent 4 hours on it and got it taken apart, still have to pull the pressure plate and flywheel but i see whats wrong, there is a washer riveted to the pressure plate that ripped off and flew, chipped up the bellhousing and everythign in there, i will take pics and post them.
there is one thing i worry about, the input shaft has a lot of play in it that i dont remember from the first time it was out when i did the clutch. I was able to move it about 1/8" up and down, and almost as much left and right-- is that ok? possibly the cause of my clutch chatter?

Another big hyped clutch blew up on a C5 a week or two ago. It shattered up thru the windshield, thru chunks near his feet and punched a hole in the oil pan too, so I guess you were lucky.
I haven't heard of this with SPEC yet. I'm staying with them when I upgrade from a Stage III to a IV.

Re: broke my bellhousing
You HAVE to spend the dough to see what is broke, (suspect part of clutch or flywheel). Don't play around with this unless you want to look like a war veteran missing necessary material below the knee. If you think I'm trying to scare you, you're right!!!!!! People have been crippled by over running clutch explosions in automatic transmissions. I think a manual flywheel coming apart would have even more kinetic energy than an auto ORC would. Don't play, get it fixed!!!!!!

Re: broke my bellhousing
OK guys, here is the update, sorry i didnt get any pics, maybe i still have a chance to get them, but I dont have the old stuff anymore.... here is the latest:
found 2 "weights" that flew off of the pressure plate, they look like washers, one laying in the bottom of the bellhousing, and another lodged between the outer pressure plate housing and the fingers, pushing 2 fingers in (probably caused my light pedal and slipping symptoms).
The bellhousing, trans, pressure plate, and end of the block were all chipped up from the flying weights, nothign to cause any major damage, just nicks all over the place.
I couldnt get the damn pilot bearing out, so i left it in there since i was losing my patience,
I seem to have more clunking out of my rear end now, but it may just be my imagination.
btw, i still have some clutch chatter, but not nearly as bad as the hays clutch (which was much stiffer and seemed to grab better).
