Default Slips out of 3rd, why?

The shark will slip out of 3rd if the car is decelerating in gear or under very low throttle. Did the previous owners just miss alot of 2nd to 3rds and the gear is worn? It seems to do this more when it is cold.

does the trans go into gear ok and then pop out or does it grind going in and when you let off the clutch its in neutral?
if it is the first problem then its either the 3rd gear itself and the slider is tapered or the fork is worn out.
if it is the second problem then more than likely its the syncro.
just trying to help ya out .....

The tranny will slip into 3rd just A-ok, but for example, i go to school on a freaking mountain and on the way down, rather than fry the brakes (because it will!) i just ride the engine down. It will stay in fourth fine, and second fine, but not third. Now this doesnt happen CONSISTANTLY, just sometimes and mostly when it is cold. To be honest this problem has led me to to the 1, 2, 4 shift around town, and only when i want to embarass somebody do i use third.

well its one of two things . either the gear and sleeve are tapered or you have slack in the gear train assembly . i doubt its the syncro, but i have been wrong before.

There is a TSB(warranty) out on this problem. "Going down a hill in third and it pops out".....that's the TSB....bad syncro.

99 Hawk is correct. You have a snycro problem, the part of the syncro that your having a problem with is the 3/4 slider assembly. There are syncro teeth on the inside of the slider. These teeth start as a point then get wider then taper back narrower. The taper holds the trans in gear. Once the taper is gone, there is nothing to hold the trans in gear, my guess is that your slider is 1) not machined right on the coast side or 2)the teeth are beat up from wear an tear. While on the subject, there are three parts that make up a "syncro" there are syncro teeth on each gear, there are slider assembly's (that engage each gear) and there are blocker rings (act as a brake for each gear so slider can slide over gear) To say you have bad "syncro's" is a very wide open statement.

I don't have the problem(knocking on wood), but dealerships/warranty work give me the *******. My question is: with this problem, could you 'hold it in 3rd gear' while going down hill?Rather than have a dealer rip appart your tranny <img border="0" alt="[whiner]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" />

I am the third owner of the car, and i know nothing of a warranty (it is a 98), do you think they would do it for free. I guess im asking if it is a recall situation. Plus i got headers and all that jive.

Page Ken C. in the SLP lounge, he has a website (I believe) that list the TSB be year and model.

FWIW, the 3rd gear fork is the most common one to bend. There is an aftermarket steel 3->4 replacement fork available during rebuilds.
