Default 4.10 SOTP difference??

A friend told me that if I went from my 3.42's to 4.10's that it would be equivalent to adding 50rwhp to my car! Is there any truth to that? He said I could drop anywhere from .3-.5 off of my 1/4 as well and add anywhere from 2-4 mph. Really?
I have 295/35-18 BFG Comp TA tires on 10.5 inch rims. Would that wide of rubber hold the tires under WOT with the 4.10's? He said it would be hard to keep them from spinning even under mildly spirited driving. But if thats the case then they aren't gonna make me faster at all. I'll just sit and spin..??

Just do it there is a big sotp feel. Also a breaking of the passengers neck feel. That was my last mod I did to date and would'nt go back you can actually use 6th gear with them. You should be ok about spinning just becareful on wet pavement. Get the speed odo calibrator or hpp3 to fix speedometer.

Adding the 4.10s does makes a big difference, but it will actually lower your power numbers on the chassis dyno. Thats no big deal though. The major problem is that the 4.10 gear is weaker then the 3.42;therefore, your chance of breaking the rear on a sticky tire or hard shift is more likely to happen.

A 4.10 will most certainly give you a big sotp improvement. As far as improved times go, that will depend on your particular setup - e.g. number of shifts, engine power peak, traction, etc. It will definitely be more fun on the street and it actually makes 6th gear useful.

Do be aware of what 99MONGOOSE mentioned about breakage. A 4.10 in a stock 10-bolt is living on borrowed time IMO. I'd do it when going to a 12-bolt.

I just went from 3.73's to 4.10's and was absolutely amazed at the difference...especially in 1st and 2nd gear....of course I have a few more ponies than the average dog too though

I just put a 12 bolt with 4.10 in the car. SOTP is a big difference. I will be going to the track this weekend and get a better idea of actual difference. I also did Zo6 intake at the same time.

Oh Yeah, You're gonna love it. If you're running the car one wknd a month in summer-fall, you should get 100 passes w/4.10's and stock 10 bolt, providing you have girdle cover & stud bolt kit. That's w/sticky tires and no more than 3000-3200 launch rpm's. That's how it worked for me--got 65 passes, took it apart, the 4.10's were getting pretty sharp--also were getting noisy. Rule of thumb: If you're lucky enough to get 75-100 1/4 passes on this setup, take the thing apart, install new Torsen carrier, bearings & gears, and you're good to go all over again. BUT, it doesn't ALWAYS work that way. Moser axles help, as well. Best wishes. WJ.

OK Track results from 3.42 to 4.10. Keep in mind this was with a zo6 intake. From what I hear the intacke added little at this time due to all stock internals.

I went from a best of 13.21 before the 4.10 on a 2.08 60' to a 12.73 on a 1.90 60' MH went up by about 3 as well.

I would recommend this mod.

Question for you Steve. When installing 4.10 in place of my 3.42. on my 01 Z28 is there a special sensor that I will need to purchase? I have an HPP3 to adjust for the 4.10 but i was told by a guy at the dealer that there was an additional sensor that needs to be replaced? I thought I would just need the ring and pinion and a standard install kit (crush sleeve, gasket, bearings etc.) Thanks.

No sensor needed that I am aware of. Just had Speed Inc. tell the PCM it had 4.10s for the speedo.
