Default Ford 9" questions

Alright, I have a few questions. How wide is a ford 9" housing sized for a 98 camaro? I have the opportunity to buy a 9" housing that is 59.25" wide, with 2 31spline axles for 70 bucks. I'd like to put together a bargain 9" for my car as I really do not want to spend 2k on something that you can buy at any junkyard for 400 fully assembled. I know about the spring perches and all that, but 2k+ is a complete ripoff. How far about are the spring perch locations? What needs to be done about the tourque arm mount? Anything else I need to know? Also, how much is a 3rd member with posi? I know making this rear end will be a time taking process with trial and error. But I figure for 70 bucks and if I can get most if not all the measurements I need I might beable to cash in under 1k. TIA

Jason

Sorry...but your not going to find moser axles and centersection in a junkyard. Moser doesnt just buy a 9" in a junkyard for $400 and then sell it to you for $2000. Remember, you get what you pay for. Bight the bullet and get the moser or youll be spending over $2000 trying to get stuff right.

Should be about the width of the stock rearend or so give or take.

I'm not sure with my Moser 9" if the wheels sit at exactly the stock location or not.

If you use your stock rearend as a guide, even cannibalize it, you can get a donor 9" to work. Just most folks don't know how to weld'n sh^t.

I understand Moser just doesn't get a junkyard 9" and sell it for 2000. But I can get a housing for 70. I know plenty of very competant and certified welders. I buy axles and a 3rd member separatly, use this housing and modify it to fit and I should be able to be in under 1k. Thats my idea. Hell, I might even have the great luck of this rear end being the right size.. who knows??

You used to be able to the housing and axles from Moser, all ready to go in, spring perches and everything, for $700, I think it's more now. That's not a terrible price.

You need the brackets for your LCA's too, again most folks don't have access to a shop that will weld in all the brackets etc. for a decent price...

I am running a used center section that at one time I paid $500 for it but I redid it and did a locker this time.

Thanks PSJ. I'm going to do some calling around and see what some shops have to say about it. I just saw the installed pics of a ford 8.8. That made me kind of curious. I'm going to wait and see what they say.

Go for it. If you can do it under $1000, you might start a trend . keep us posted on how it goes. goodluck.

Do you know where that housing came from?
Was it out of a certain car?

I'm ALL for doing budget 9" rears, but personally I wouldn't mess w/ a used 9" Housing. Like John said Moser sells the housing and axle package complete w/ all bracktery and TA Bracket for ~7-800. A BARGAIN if you ask me. I can't see where its cost/time effective to jack with trying to put Spring/Shock/TA/PHR Brackets, AND buy Axles, and Housing Ends.

Find yourself a Center Section, and you can be in a 9" $1200 or less (Depending on the Center you find) w/ lil' to no headache.
