Default About to change 10bolt fluid.

Not sure if this is right section, it's maintenance, but it's related to gears/axles sooo...

In any case, I have 3 bottles of Valvoline 75w90, since I figure it's my first time changing it 107k miles on car, no clue how many times it's been changed, and I very well may end up making a horrendous mess and I'll have extra if I need it, have one of them pumps that goes on the end of the bottle, to further stop a ridiculous mess...

Haven't really found a straight answer with search. I have a '00 Formula, so would I need the rear end additive or not? Also what color RTV did you all use, is there any difference between clear/black/red/blue? If my fluid choice sucks *****, tell me I'll return it for something different. thanks.

-J

ALSO: How long did you let the RTV cure?

some say yes some say no for the additive, just play it safe and use a bottle. You have good rear end oil. with so many miles on the car i would recommend taking off the cover and checking for any metal shavings. Then put a new gasket on with RED RTV. Thats all ya need. And yes there is a difference between the colors of the RTV (heat tolerances etc etc) good luck. I gotta do mine soon as well.

I use valvoline as well, but 80w90. You won't need 3 qts though, in fact, it won't even hold 2 full qts before its spilling out the fill hole.

As far as additive, I used some in my torsen, even though with the worm gears I didnt think it should have to have it, but I knew it couldnt hurt.

I have been using black silicone, and have had great results. I used the same stuff for the bottom of my timing chain cover when I did the heads/cam. I always hated seeing something put together with orange or something bright, it just doesnt look as good.

Red RTV -
# Replaces most cut gaskets
# Resists cracking; shrinking and migrating from thermal cycling
# Resists auto and shop fluids
# -75 deg. F to 650 deg. F (intermittent)

Black RTV-
# Seal, bonds, repairs, mends
# Secures glass, metal, vinyl and plaster
# -80 to 500 deg F.
# Waterproof and flexible
# Resists oil, water, weather and grease

Just picked up the 4oz additive and the RTV Red Flavor. Now question for anyone else who's done this is, how long did you let the RTV cure for? On the package it says 1hr to skin, and 24hrs PLUS to completely cure. That sucks. Or do I not have to wait that long since the rear end doesn't get exposed to as much heat as say valve covers?

I have always cleaned the cover up, laid a bead around it, installed, and immediately filled the rear back up. Never had an issue.

Just finished changing it, and did what you said. I am letting it sit over night, simply because I don't have to use the car tomorrow so the longer it sits the better I feel about the RTV seal. Here is a pic of the guts, does it look in decent shape for 107k miles? I really don't know what it should look like, there was hardly ANY "fuzz" on the magnet.
