What is the limit of a stock driveshaft?

I have a stock 99 Camaro SS aside from a catback, lid and other stupid stuff. I am pondering the idea of a 12 bolt, full slicks and a nice clutch before a head/cam swap.
I don't want to upgrade the stock driveshaft because of $$$ and the fact that I don't think my car is strong enough to break it.
Am I just asking for trouble or should I be all set?

I know of several guys running M6, stock DS and running 10s. If I were you, I would watch the classified section and buy a couple extra stock DS's. You can usually pick them up for about $100 or so. For the price of the aftermarket ones you can buy 3-5 stock ones. I had a 3.5 inch LPE DS but it wouldn't fit with my 12 bolt. It was a bit longer then my stock one. I sold my stock one about 2 weeks before Rapid installed my 12 bolt. I needed a stock one ASAP so it cost me $350 for a new one. So I too am looking for used one as spares. I am running a stock one and my SS is a M6 and capable of mid to low 11s. I will be juicing it too. Then I will be in the 10s easily.

If your ever planning on putting down more horsepower at all, or are ever going to run a sticky tire (even Nitto's), get an aftermarket driveshaft. Its not worth the time, hassle, and headache breaking ****. I got my Dennys Driveshaft brand-new for $360 and it will never break.

Well I am running 414RWHP through my 12 bolt w/ 4.10s and 315tires out back and launched at 5000RPM and the stock one held up fine. Mikey at Rapid Motorsports even told me he ran his stock one even when he was in the 10s. Sure an aftermarket one is good insurance but its not a necessity until you plan on severe abuse.

I replaced mine when I put in the moser 9" and decided I was going to be doing 5500rpm launches on the spray with ET Drags. If you have an automatic, you can hold out with it for quite a while, M6 really needs a new one. I've seen people with cars putting out under 400rwhp on ET streets twist stock shafts in half, and i've seen 550+rwhp cars hold up just fine. It's a big gamble.
I might have been able to buy 3 stock driveshafts for the price of my new 3.5" aluminum driveshaft (good for 1100hp), but each time you tear up a driveshaft you run a risk of tearing up A LOT of other stuff under the car. (gas lines, brake lines, floor of the car, rear end, transmission, etc, etc) That's just a HUGE safety issue for yourself and anyone else who might be around you when it lets go.

I don't know why everyone has to pay 300+ for a replacement driveshaft. I just had one built out of steel at a local shop for $135 and that was with new 1350 yokes made out of 3" .083 steel shaft, it is alittle heavier but it will not make one bit of difference.
