Default Motive 3.90s in the mail

So, ordered my motive 3.90s with the master install kit. Just wondering what else little **** needs to be bought to do the install. im gonna be helping with it but ive never done it but my mechanic buddy has done alot of them on f-bods and 10-bolts, so he is the man. Just want to know what other **** i need like special tools and what not. Also, any reviews of A4 guys going from 3.23s to 3.90s?

You might want a different cover gasket if you got the Ratech kit. I got that kit and the cover gasket sucked... luckily I had a TA cover with a new gasket waiting to go on.

As far as getting the carrier and gears out... you'll need 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm, 3/4", and 1 1/4" sockets, an air ratchet, impact, BFH, and a pry bar (if I remember correctly). Motive 3.90's should fit without the paddle mod... I didn't have to do it. You're mechanic buddy should have the special tools to measure pinion depth and backlash. For your Motive's, the proper pinion depth will be marked on the face of the pinion gear, and I believe backlash should be set to .008"-.012".

.008 is usually the ideal backlash

my gear installer heavily recommends a solid pinion spacer(RAT-4111 from summitracing.com) to prevent premature wear and walk. his 10 bolts have actually taken severe daily duty beatings without failure.

Mine are in the mail too.

On that solid pinion spacer, what is different about the install process, and does it really make a big difference?

Hey man hows it going? Let me know on how the car does after the gear install. I am thinking of going 3.73.

On the 6th of next month I should have some track times for you finally. Been really buisy here. Talk at you later.

Good luck with your gears.

I had 390s installed in my 02 ws6. The pinion seal and the nut that came with the install kit did not fit so I had to order the right seal from a local parts store. Other than that, car pulls nicely and no whine what so ever.

The 99-up pinion seals are different, so they must have sold you the wrong kit. The nut should have worked though, so they may have just sold you a messed up kit.

Default Update

Well, i finnaly got around to doing those gears. Had to wait on a friend who had lots of experience and not to mention, a dial indicator. Well, havent really gotten around to slamming on the gas yet, as i want to properly break them in, but thier is definatly some noise when i let off the gas at highway speeds, and from what i read, it might have something to do with the shims. what i dont understand, is how do u know when its properly shimmed, it seems like a guessing game, cause with the dial indicator it seemed like we couldnt get anymore perfect, cause we had to do it twice because the first time it was way to tight and the indicator read 0. Well, ill post up again when ive broken them in and put the mickeys on the car.
