Default Another 9" question...nodular center section?

The 9" I'm purchasing (used) was made by Moser. Does anyone know if Moser offers the nodular iron center section as an option or what? If not, what is Moser's center section made out of? Would it be necessary to purchase a new (nodular) center section in order to make the rear fully reliable? Thanks.

Alan, you can get the nodular center section as an option. I'm not running one yet. It was about the only thing that held when the torque arm broke!

2 weak points in a 9" are factory cast centers (I run a nodular Strange center) and flimsy pinion support (I run a billet pinion Support)

If you are looking for bulletproof (and I suppose thats what you are doing since you want a spool) then get a strange nodular center

Whoa, it's Thumpy!!! Hey, Jeff, what's happening? How's Sarah doing? Are y'all about ready for Thumpy Jr. or Thumpette to come along?

Okay, about the 9", I don't think the current owner of the rear knows (or cares) whether or not the center section is cast or nodular. Is there an easy way to tell just by looking at it? Also, would you advise upgrading the 2 "weak points" or will the rear still be pretty strong without the upgrades? From what I can tell, the nodular center section is between $300 and $400. Ouch! What about the billet pinion support? Where might I find that at? Thanks for your help, guys!

its difficult to tell if its nodular as its still a cast iron with better materials to make it somewhat stronger.

the pinion support should be in the ~100 range or less. make sure its a daytona style for street use or inadequate pinion oiling can occur

AFAIK, you can run it sucessfully but the M6 puts some stress on rear components and why do it if it can still break? I've beat the crap out of my 9" and haven't had any problems

Thanks, Brian. You are quickly moving up my list of heroes! One more question, and another opportunity to move up the list even further: where might I find one of these billet supports? I see a forged aluminum one made by Strange on Summit's website, but no billet ones. Any thoughts?

The Nodular Cases should be stamped, beit from whatever company they're from. To the best of my knowledge Moser doesn't make a standard Case, only Nodular Iron and Aluminum. FoMoCo actually even has Nodular units floating artound out there that can be identified by the bigass "N" on it. For the cost of a Nodular Iron unit, its a pretty good investment for anyone going 10s or faster, I'd almost suggest the "N" case as a must, no matter the manufacturer.

When we were selling a couple of these things a day we actually outsourced the Center Sections and got 3.25" Bearing Strange units, not so much for the case or other components, but more consistent gear setup.

Hey Brian, where'd you get that Strange case?

Good luck!

Hey Kurtis...still working good

Rage:

I don't know what the part numbers are offhand but I do know I when I bought the rear from Kurtis at the time, the center was built by Randy's Ring and Pinion. The billet pinion support I have is that purple thing shown in the link below

http://www.diferentials.com/race-parts.shtml

You can order it from them...

Any more experience with this company? They offer lots of ring-and-pinion ratios, but I just need someone to tell me what an awesome company they are before I order all this stuff. Cool website, but has anyone had any experience with them? Kurtis?

Thanks, Brian!

we've ordered quite a bit of shim kits and whatnot from them. They also set up my 9" center. but if you just get parts there's nothing at all wrong with them

Update: Per Rob Moser, they use nodular cases in their complete centers.
