Default Full spool vs. detroit locker

Do you think a full spool with 35 splines rear is better or a Detroit locker with 35 splines? Remember I would like to keep it streetable to an extent. Like just to mess with the kids and there slow toys lol. I do have a second car.

On the street, I'd stick with the locker. I hated street driving on a full spool.

I have a 35 spline locker. Kinda hate the shimmy issue when changing gears, but the noise is bearable. If I had it to do over again. I would get a 31 spline (or 33???) with a Tru Trac.

I'd go locker if you want some streetability, spools gonna tear up tires around corners and is more dangerous if you get caught in the rain

'nother vote for true trac or locker on a street driven vehicle. Full spools are a pain in the *** on the street.

Full spool with 35 spline here and no real issues at all.

There is a safety issue with running a spool on the street.. if you break an axle at some speed and with WOT, you would quickly make a turn in the direction of the broken axle... could be a car, wall or a cliff in that direction..! That would be a bad thing. It is bad enough on the strip, but you usually have a safety wall to keep you in place (some what)..

I am sponsored by Eaton/Detroit Locker. I have experimented with spools vs. Detrot Locker in my race car. It was a high to mid 9 second car. We had to run the 26x10 slicks. I did back to back testing at the track and the car always had better 60' times with the Locker. It was one or two hundreths but it was better. The only explinaton that was that the short tire was changing height during the launch. The car would run a 1.34 to 1.36 with the spool. With the Locker it was 1.32 to 1.34 on a good track. After we completed the testing I ran the Locker the balance of the season.

I have one in my son's car on the street. It can be anoying to some people. Not nearly as anoying as other changes can be.

The True Track would be a great choice if your close to the 10's.

Good Luck!

Robin

My vote is for a locker also.

A spool will eat tires up quick on the street.

35 spline full spool here in my street car. I love it. I have no problems driving in rain, and the tire wear issues I always hear about don't seem to affect me. I have driven locker equipped cars, and I will choose a spool over a Locker for driveability over and over again. Spools are a little cluncky in tight parking spots and sharp slow speed turns but I run my tire pressure alittle lower in the rear to soften that. Tru-trac or spool for me. Also to the guy that said spools are unsafe. I fail to see how a broken axle under a normal driving circumstance would automatically make your car turn to the direction of the broken axle. You would still control the direction of your car with your steer wheels, and just because the tire is no longer under power doesn't mean that it would turn either, afterall there have been open differentials for 50+ years that only spin one wheel and they turn just fine.
