Default Manual Trans for a Big Block chevelle

i know its not an ls1 but i figured the ls1 guys would know about a strong manual trans. Heres the deal i have a m21 that came with the car(67 Chevelle SS) and am going to be putting an ls7 crate engine in it and i dont think the trans will take the abuse. I know a m22 is stronger and will take itbut are there any 5 or 6 speeds that will take the abuse?

I ran the M22 when I had an LS7 Chevelle and it worked great!

Believe it or not the 2nd gen T56 ('94 & newer, not '93) is actually stronger than the M22!

Bill,
You happen to be going through the same thing my father and I went through 2 years ago when we had our 454 LS6 rebuilt with a different cam, headwork etc. Our first run at the track, we lost everything in the tranny and the only good thing left was the case. We switched over to a Borg Warner Super T-10 with the nodular iron case. This was supposed to be as strong or stronger than the M22 due to the different case. In the last 2 years, we only have raced the car a few times. Its a full weight 1970 Chevelle LS6 chevelle, with a bunch of mods, and when he races it, he dumps the clutch at 5000 rpm with slicks. The tranny has yet to show any signs of breakage, and still shifts nice and smooth. The cars best run was 12.06 @ 115mph with a 1.98 60' . The car is currently being changed over to a TH400 with a transbrake and 4500 stall converter. If your interested, I can give you the number of the guy who built ours in Bartlett, IL. Any questions email me.

i have a built th400 already but would like to stick with a stick unless it is absolutely necessary. i like the idea of through the gears As it looks right now the car is going to put put togther using the original m21( which is fresh). I kind of have a feeling that the ls7 wont be in the car long because im sure im gonan get sick of putting 110 octane in the car all the time. I will probably switch to the ls6 ce motor we have (if my dad doesnt put it in a midyear vette by then) because itll run on pump gas. Then the ls7 goes in my impala with a 150 shot and a th400

Basically through closed exhaust, 4.10 gears, LR50x15 BFG Radial T/A street tires the car ran an amazing 12.16 @ 118 MPH weighing in at 3980# and this was over 20 years ago when nobody was fast in street trim

Hhmmm. Not real sure about that. What is the torque rating of our T-56? What has Harlan done to his T-56 to make it live with that monster motor he has?
Oh well. Good luck.

Torque rating on our T-56's is 450lbs I think, not too sure, Harlans is stock, its time is coming...

I had a 6-speed before, it only lasted 9,500 miles though, now I have a TH400...that is what harlan is most likely going to do as well..that car should fly..
