Default 9" center section question?

My dad has a 9 inch in his chevy 85 silverado w/ a locker and 31 spline axles.

can I use the center section from his rearend and just buy a housing from Moser/sponsor?

as long as the locker is 31 spline then im fine?

Chad

Thats correct, all 9" housing centers are the same as far as bolting in jus gotta make sure your axles are 31 spline for it to work.

Yes you can! I bought a moser 9in. housing used from a forum member and it had 31 spline axle's as well. Then I just bought a center section for it with 31 spline locker.Your backing plate's off of your 10 bolt will bolt up also, perfect fit!

Chad just count the splines either on the axle shaft or the locker.

One company I've talked to recently claimed that some use a unique spline angle and thus their axles/parts will not work with other brands. Is there some truth to that? I thought spline angle was an industry standard.

Yes this is true. To a point and especially for specific components.

A key factor to consider when purchasing axles is the axle spline. Naturally, if the axles you are purchasing are to be mated to existing components you will need a similar replacement spline. But all splines are not created equal. Some manufacturers will make axles with any and all popular spline configurations, including Dana 60, 12-bolt Chevy, 9" Ford, etc., plus splines compatible with after-market products from other manufacturers.

However, spools are a unique component and are especially important since locked (spoolequipped) rear ends are subject to as much as twice the torsion load of standard open-type differentials. A 45 degree pressure angle is ultimately stronger than the industries 'standard' per-sey... but there are only a few who pay attention to this.

Thus far... what I "see" as the industry standard for most entry level performance axles (which includes OEM stock components) is a 30 degree pressure angle.

That difference alone makes a huge difference in the minor diameter... as this is what controls shaft strength. It also limits the major and minor diameters for spline depth and its associated clearance... on both the axle and involute profile.
