I'm not an expert by any means,i'm just glad mine is back together and driving again w/3.42s.
Good luck.
OK i just called MTI and talked to wayne.........and he said that if the car that i'm buying the gear from is a 2000 SS his gear will be thin. Mine on the other hand is a GU2 and and needs a thick gear.
"Yes, I am aware of that. Auto's come with 2.73 and 6 speeds come with 3.42s. I had 3.42s stock and switched them out for 3.73s and then again for 4.10s
They will fit fine."
Also, you might have to get a new reluctor ring if you have a 3 channel ABS setup. Somebody else can better explain that, since I don't have the 3 channel setup.
Hope this helps
You can get a 3-series "take off" carrier from SLP or another vendor for like $99. You're going to need it if you're buying just the ring-and-pinion off your friend. Those 3.42s were designed to work with a 3-series carrier.
