It should be fine, your auto has a 3.23, is the guy you are buying off of 6-speed or auto, 6-speeds have 3.42's, you don't want to swap with an auto because it won't give you any gains...you would be swapping for the same gear...

That gear should put you there no problem, get some headers and get into the low 12's...

My 2.73s were a thick gear.Luckily the 3.42s i purchased were a thick gear as well.I originally planned on 3.23s but it was a thin gear and wouldn't fit my carrier.I really like the 3.42s,what a difference from 2.73s.

Good luck.

Then you will be in the position i was in.You would have to change the carrier at about $400.+,or find a thick gear.

I'm not an expert by any means,i'm just glad mine is back together and driving again w/3.42s.

Good luck.

So....how will i know??? i have never seen a comparison. Its a really good deal....and how come now one else has brought this up about thick or thin.

OK i just called MTI and talked to wayne.........and he said that if the car that i'm buying the gear from is a 2000 SS his gear will be thin. Mine on the other hand is a GU2 and and needs a thick gear.

The guy i'm lookin to buy from sent me this e-mail. after i told him that i needed a thick gear and the his was thin (told by MTI)
"Yes, I am aware of that. Auto's come with 2.73 and 6 speeds come with 3.42s. I had 3.42s stock and switched them out for 3.73s and then again for 4.10s

They will fit fine."

The 2.73 gears use a 2-series differential carrier. The 3.23, 3.42, & 3.73 gears use a 3-series carrier. To put a 3-series gear on a 2-series carrier, you have to either use a spacer ring (not recommended) or use a "thick" aftermarket gear made especially for this swap. You could also replace the 2-series carrier with a 3-series and use the 3.42 gears. The later option is what I'm going to be doing soon.

Also, you might have to get a new reluctor ring if you have a 3 channel ABS setup. Somebody else can better explain that, since I don't have the 3 channel setup.

Hope this helps

If you use a "thick" gear, from what I've heard, the spot at which the gears engage is not ideal for durability.

You can get a 3-series "take off" carrier from SLP or another vendor for like $99. You're going to need it if you're buying just the ring-and-pinion off your friend. Those 3.42s were designed to work with a 3-series carrier.
