Default what gears?

Ok, I finally got my m6 swap done. It still chatters for the fact I still have the 3.23 gears in still. I am about to do some other stuff and I want everything to work together. I am going to slap a set of the 19x12 07 Zo6 wheels on the back with either a 305-325/30/19.(same height just one wider than other) I am also going to intall a semi large cam, just above .600 lift with a duration between 238-244 @.50 with a lsa in the area of 112. (ex: S cam, Tsp ms3, T-Rex something along those lines) I am leaning towards the MS3 though.

My question is what gears do I need to make my combo of cam and wheel size work for my advantage? The car will remain a cam only car for a long time. I am open to any and all suggestions.

I'd say a either a 3.73 or 4.10 gear, any more gear and you'd have to really rev it and that tire isn't very tall.

http://www.f-body.org/gears/ You can enter in the combo here. and play with the info, enter max rpm as where you want to shift at, over reving the motor just because it can make it to the finish line without hitting the rev limit doesn't mean it will go faster. Ideally you'll want to hit the finish line in 4th gear with your shift light just turning on.

Depends on the cam, if you go with something you rev to 6700 then you may go with a 4.30 gear, I wouldn't go 4.56 without a taller tire.

I just installed 3.90's in my M6 SS yesterday. I havent beaten on them yet till they break in but I notice that the car moves easier and 6th is much more usable.

I have 4.30's and love them but will need a taller tire when I go to the track once my cam goes in.

who makes 3.90? Thats not a chevy gear. Keep in mind that I have the stock junk rear in my car. I thought that 3.90 is a ford ring gear?

I had 3.90 motive performance in my 10 bolt. I always wish I went steeper. Thats why I put the Motive Performance 4.30's in my 9". A few other mfg's makes them for the 10 bolt as well.

4.10/4.11s should be the MIN in my opinion. Depending on what kind of power and traps your gonna be looking at, maybe even 4.30s.

I think anything above 4.10 is too steep for an f-body. the LS1 (stock) doesnt rev high enough to really utilize that steep of a gear IMO. I have a friend with an s2000 whos planning on puttin either 4.55s or 4.77s in his car. His redline is 8000 rpm though not 6200 like an LS1. I think 3.90s are a good daily driver gear ratio. For you guys that either use your cars as weekend cars or summer cars, 4.10s or higher would certainly make the car more fun, but I would never go above 4.10 in my DD. But thats me.

I must add, mine is not a daily driver. While I really like my 4.30's and would recomend them, I think 4.10's might be the way to go with a daily driver.

I have a set of 3.90's any i have no complaints at all. They are SO quiet unlike my 3.73's in my v6 camaro which drove me nuts.
Also, my car is a DD and 3.73's wouldnt have made much of a difference and 4.10's would have been overkill IMHO. I feel I have the best of both worlds.

I don't know how tall of tire you are planning on using, but with my stock rims/tires I barely top out 4th in the quarter mile.

Good luck!

I have ran 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 and 4.56 gears in my camaro.

I liked the 4.10's the best, 4.56 I ran out of gear in the 1/4.

My next gear set will be a 4.30 or 4.56 gear but I will be running a 30 or 31" tire.

I just installed a 12 bolt with 3.73s in my car. The car feels so much faster and it totally eliminated my clutch chatter. I wouldve went with 4.11s but I bought the 12 bolt used and they came with it.

yeah the tire combo is netted to just shy of 26inch in the rear. It will be a cam only car for a really long time. It is my dd, not that i drive across the world or anything. I was thinking 3.73's but its alot from a factory m6 car. I think that 4.10's aren't to much but kind iffy. So the 3.90's are the half way point. So 3.90's are going in. next week maybe.

4.10 ratio if you plan on driving on the street and racing. Good middle of the road option.
