Default truetrack worth it?

so i broke my second posi unit last night and i was wonding if upgrading to a DETROIT LOCKER TRUETRAC would be worth the extra 200 dollars or if i should just another eaton, i know i need to upgrade(s60) which i plan on doing with tax returns but untill then i need my car so basicly im wondering if anybodys used the truetrac in the 10 bolt and if it will hold up to a couple 4g dumps on slicks

heres pics of last nights destruction

It doesn't seem to matter what kind of differential you run in a 10-bolt...they all end up being too small. You'll just be throwing money down the drain with that piece.

I'd go with a mini spool as the 10 bolt might last a little longer this way. Bob

could always take an easy on it till you get the new rear axle. I went with a true trac in my 9in but its not here yet..as to putting one in a 10 bolt, i put a auburn in my last one and it never broke...just shattered 3 ring and pinions and 1 stock carrier

I made the mistake of rebuilding my 10 bolt. What a waste of money that was! The factory torsen is like the truetrac. I blew up both units the exact same way. You're going to regret it if you waste the money on the turd you have. It would be cheaper to just buy another rear from a junkyard for $250 and run it till it blows.......and it will unless you drive like grandma.

Spools aren't "race only." There are those that drive around with them....I do. But a spool on stock axles is not a good idea. With both back tires locked in together, there is a lot more stress on the axles when cornering....especially with 315's or sticky tires. I siezed up my eaton posi in my 12-bolt a couple weeks ago and went with a spool. As others have said...stop wasting money on the 10-bolt. Get yourself a 12-bolt or a 9" and call it a day.

Tru trac CAN be broken, hopefully not to the degree that yours had but they can bust. Ive had it happen, The best ins. is a 12 bolt or better and a spool.

The 8.8 crowd seems to be really liking the 3 pinion design Truetrac for drag racing. In 12 bolt carnation the word is they are strong enough for 600 rwtq

Thoughts?

I think the concensus is yes the Trutrac is a good product in the 12 bolts and 9" rears. Guys with 10 bolts have had problems with them just like the torsen.

In a physically larger rear end, sure, the Truetrac should be a pretty good posi, but I wouldn't bet the farm on handling 600 rwtq if that torque is being applied by clutch dump.

To the Op here? 10 bolts suck dont put another nickle into that thing buy a bigger rear.

As for truetracs? In my experience carriers are not all created equally when comparing platform to platform. The 12 bolt GM carrier physically is radically different than that of a 9" or a Ford 8.8 so although they utilize the same technology for torque bias whether it be clutch packs in an Eaton or helical gears in a truetrack, torsen etc thats where it stops. The shape and cases are completely different across platforms so they will have different weak spots and ultimately one may be stronger in one platform but not another. Finding out which is almost black art.

I roasted a Torsen T2R this summer and my car is far from blazing fast. Seems Torsen have had issues this year all around its not just the drag strip thats breaking them in autocross there have been many failures also. Bad metallurgical sumthinor another I could care less really the point is it broke and I wont buy another one but i did like its performance. Now I'm back to the proven T-Loc and looking at Truetracs because I see these guys over at Modularfords running 9's on them in an 8.8 so I'm literally blown away. One guy on a 1.32 60' so I could care less clutch dumps or not thats some serious strength right there.

So I'm curious about what others thought I'm currently trying to find anyone whos broken a 3 pinion 8.8 Truetrac. In fact I'd like to hear about anyone who broke a 3 pinion truetrac

My friend had a true track in his 84 GT he launches his car at 6K dumps the clutch and floors it engaging the 150 shot off the line. Runs mid-high tens and he has yet to break it. Wouldnt a true trac be good in an s60 or a 12 bolt. Because a detroit locker is so loud on turns and makes your car sound like its broken or something from inside. Any opinions? Is the noise worth it?

I have about 1500 street miles on a truetrac in my 10 bolt with 4.10 gears. Works perfectly on the street, but haven't had it to the track since the rebuild. There is absolutely no noise or gear whine from the rear when turning, decelerating or anything else. The old rear was only spinning the driver's side at the end, but It'll leave two nasty patches from the 315 DR's now!

Tru trac in a 12 bolt is one heavy bastard, I also cyrogenicly treated mine to stack the deck a bit.I can and will break anything sooner or later.
