Default Results from TCI 3800 in 200-4R!

The SS has made some significant changes in the last week. Thanks to our lead mechanic, Joseph, for all of the late nights of hard work. We installed a set of our stage II 5.3L truck heads and swapped in one of our 200-4R conversion packages with a TCI 3800 torque converter. We were thrashing like mad to get the car done in time for SLP Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday at Texas Motorplex (370 miles from Lubbock). We finished tuning the car via LS1 Edit at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, and we were on the road to Dallas at 4:00 a.m.! Here's a run-down on the complete swap:

*TSP/MTI stage II 5.3L heads with dual valve springs
*200-4R transmission built by Century Automotive
*Yank 200-4R transmission cross-member
*TSP custom steel driveshaft
*custom TSP tuning via LS1 Edit
*BMR lightweight k-member

I had a chance to sell my 4L60E with a fresh rebuild, so I jumped on the chance while it was worth something! This 200-4R is awesome! The shifts are incredible, and it's SO NICE to have a non-computer-controlled transmission! I can now adjust my shift points at the track by adjusting my shift light. Between the transmission, k-member, and tires, I managed so shed 76 lbs. off of the car!

I only got one pass; the lines were SO LONG! I did my burnout to try and break in a new set of tires and proceeded to the starting line. The setup felt like it could leave hard when I did some blasts on the street. I brought the RPM's up to 2,200 RPM and nailed it on the third yellow light. I was a little anxious with a .485 RT, but I was amazed that I was spinning the 26x10x15" ET Drags! Even though it was spinning, I still managed a 1.55 60' time. I was pleased that my tighter 3800 RPM stall torque converter could still pack a punch. I was not able to make a full pass because my ET Drags were not properly balanced. Right around the 1/8-mile, the car started to shudder BAD. It got bad enough for me to back out of the throttle a few times. I knew I was not going to get a clean pass, so the car went back on the trailer.

I was VERY pleased with the results of this new converter. Thanks to the guys at TCI for getting this new converter to me in time to test it out! FYI, I went with a tighter 3,800 stall over my former Yank PT4400 because I'm wanting to run nitrous. I have a TNT F2 kit that will make it on the car this week. I was worried about giving up some 60' ability with the 3,800 stall, but TCI delivered in a big way! I feel that 1.4x 60' times are achievable with this converter N/A. We'll start out with a TNT 100 shot and see what it's good for in the 60' and 1/4-mile.

As for the Century-built 200-4R, this transmission is going to take some serious abuse! Mike Kurtz at Century has already tested it to over 800 RWHP! He laughed at my measly 550 RWHP on the bottle and said that a window switch is not in order. LOL We will be offering this transmission as a complete bolt-in unit for those that are wanting a bullet-proof transmission with an OD. It comes with a 6-month 6,000-mile warranty, and there are no strings attached! If you break it within that time frame, then Mike fixes it! He's been proving these transmissions in the Buick GN's for years, and they've started to become more popular among the f-bodies.

I'll keep everyone posted with the new setup and how the TCI Super Street Fighter 3800 performs. We have a local customer installing a TCI 3800 in his '98 T/A this week (to replace his 3,000 stall Midwest converter), so that will make for a good comparison as well. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about any of the TCI torque converters.

You gonna put up some sick numbers with that combo Trevor.

I am interested to see the N/A numbers at a good track once you get the tune set and get to stand on it from start to finish. Had to be a pisser to load it up after a 2 hr plus wait and all the work to get there.

If you get a chance, E-Mail me your price and info on the 200 R4. I am somewhat interested myself, and I have a few cars in Tulsa who I think would benifit from it also. I would also be interested in what it's build up is to make it so durable.

Good luck with the new combo, and welcome to the TCI clan. Looks like they are onto something.

Things are looking good Trevor! Get those tires balanced and head out to the track w/ the F2 kit.

I will finish up the pricing on the complete 200-4R conversion this week and post it up. It will be offered as a few different packages (depending on your desired torque arm location mount), complete with the detent cable, brackets, etc. FYI, the A4's will need to have their PCM flashed with an M6 VIN. I'm running a 2001 M6 VIN. The PCM tends to get mad when the vehicle is moving but none of the trans. wires are hooked up.

Jason - I have the jetting for the F2 kit from a 75 shot all the way up to a 300 shot. The larger pills will be saved for a forged bottom-end. I MIGHT try a 150 shot at the Spring Break Shootout, but I'll mostly run the 100 shot. I'm not wanting to build an engine anytime soon. LOL

Yeah - I can definitely vouch for the 200-4R (see sig) built by Mike Kurtz at Century - the thing is a piece of art. And good for 900+ ft-lbs - which should let it handle a sprayed solid roller 422 with no problems.

I am very curious to see how it does now that I have a much looser converter. I now have a Torque Converter Shop (a different TCS just to confuse everyone) converter in the car set to stall 4000 motor and 4400 spray. Will post results whenever I get the car back from MTI and then Madman.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 200r4 for the my TA swap. Trevor could you take some pics of how you mounted the TV cable? Also where are you shifting and how high is the shift extention with that TCI 3800 converter?

I noticed no ET Posted. A little tougher when you gotta shift.

Sounds like a good set-up.

i like my 200-4r. 2 people in town have that tranny(built locally by performance transmission) and we have another talked into a m6 to a4 swap using the 200-4r

Is the 200R4 any more efficient than the 4L60E? I thought I remember reading a post on that, stating it was worth some HP since it was a lighter assembly.

Just curious. Not like I'm looking for every last drop. If that was the case, I'd go on a diet.

Trevor, looks like your working on a sweet combo there Not a bad 60ft. for spinning either! Maybe next time we can see some 1/4 ET and MPH

No, I still don't understand why people get all bent out of shape just to shift. I've raced cars that you have to manually shift a lot more than I have raced a PCM-controlled vehicle. I didn't bother posting an ET or MPH because I had to get out of it quite a few times and had some crazy vibration from the out-of-balance tires. However, if it makes you feel better, it ran a whopping 11.52 @ 115 MPH. The setup feels really strong, and I am more than anxious to get a solid ET from it. It's not too bad for having to get out of the throttle.

TA2SLO346 - I will take some pics of how the TV cable was mounted and post them up. Mike at Century likes to see the TV cable fully-extented at WOT. As you know, setting up the TV cable is critical to a properly-working trans. since it does dictate part-throttle shifts and line pressure.

Kurt - Yes, the 200-4R is supposed to be more efficient than the 4L60E.

Scott - See the reply above for an ET and MPH. It might be a little better this weekend.

Is this the same guy who a few months ago was bashing TCI ?? I`m confused, what`s going on around here with all the TCI posts. I thought Mike @ Yank proved they were junk with those unbiased side by side comparisons.. surely the paper lock up clutches are going to grenade soon in them TCI`s .. LOL!
and I got bashed for sticking up for TCI..

Superman, that was someone else. I myself have been installing lots of TCI converters in the last year. I know Trevor has been in contact with them for quite a while also. To cut a 1.55 60' on the first pass with a new setup is pretty awesome and shows that the combo is working very well. We're gonna play around with the car this weekend and see what we can do with our wonderful 5000 DA of air up here.
