Help! I bent sumptin' just don't know what..
Had an "off-road event" this morning on the way to work. Rear end shudders and vibrates really bad now, at all speeds. I hit the left rear on the curbing.
Got 'er in the air, turned it on, and watched the rears rotate under power. Right tire tracks straight and true, but the left has a visible wobble. Took the tire in for measurements, and it's straight and true.
I'm thinking two things: the axle shaft is bent, or the housing is bent. Wheelbase is 101 3/8th on the left, 101 1/2 on the right. The gap between top of inner tire and fenderwell is 1/8th closer on the left than the right.
O tech gurus, gimme a bone! Methinks to go the new axle shaft route.

I hit a curb in my third gen, bent the wheel and axle. I really doubt you could bend the housing. Can you take the wheel off and see if the axle hub wobbles?

i smacked the hell out of a curb in my 01 SS and i bent the rim, the axle, and the housing! crazy ****. i had the same off measurements between the inner tire and the fenderwells. i originally thought it was the panhard bar but i bought a new one, put it on, and had the same off measurements. thats when i realized it was the housing. i actually had the dealership estimate it and they also said it was the housing. i guess it would depend on how hard u hit the curb. good luck tho

I've got the old shaft out and am waiting for the new(used) to be delivered. It was too easy getting the shaft out. Took all of 20 minutes.

Think I got it
UPDATE:
The axle shaft was sitting on the porch this evening when I got home, so I jumped into the repair. Took my time, made sure everything was buttoned up right and torqued correctly.
Went out for a test run, and viola! She's nice and smooth again. Absolutely no shudder or shake at all. Didn't go over 55 mph though 'cuz of all the damn fog out tonight. I'll take her to work tomorrow, put some speed on the rear end. Tonight tho, T/A feels like it should. Next, I get her a four-wheel alignment done.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks. All told, I was out $83.00 for new gear fluid additive, new bearing seal, and used axle shaft. That's waaay better than roughly $300 and up through a stealership or other shop!!
