Check the door code for "GU5." That means 3.23 gears. If instead, it says "GU2", then you have 2.73 gears.

All A4 LS1 F-bodies have the shifter layout like that. The door code is the only way to tell without jacking up the rear end and counting the revolutions. Camaros go 1-2-D-OD, Firebirds go 1-2-3-D

My car has 2.73 gears, and note the shifter in this picture:

Actually its the opposite whiteman. The higher the gear ratio, the harder the acceleration. I went from GU5 (3:23) to 3:73's. Big difference accross the band. Loss of top speed of course but 0 to 140 (wow)

It should be located on the back edge of the drivers door. You should be able to see it plain as day when the driver's door is open.... the only reasons it wouldn't be there is if your car has had a door replaced, or repainted, or someone took the sticker off.

Sharkyman, he means it would make more difference going from 2.73s to a numerically higher gear, like 3.73s, rather than going from 3.23s to the numerically higher gear.

Well another easy way to tell wether its a 2:73 or 3:23 stock is 3:23 have an aluminum 3' driveshaft. 2:73 have the iron one.
And yeah it would be a big diff, but any swap would require shift point editing, and the best to do that is LS1 edit. I use HPP3, I could program upshifts at WOT but not downshifts.

Sharky, that's not a 100% accuarate way to tell. Any car that cam with non-speed rated tires came with the steel shaft (even M6s.) That idea got started because MOST cars that were optioned with 2.73 gears were also optioned with non-speed rated tires...but it was possible to option a 2.73 geared car with the speed rated tires. This gives you the 162 MPH limiter rather than the 115 MPH limiter and makes an aluminum shaft necessary.

Z rated tires and a Steel shaft? Well now I've heard of ALL combinations.

Better check those door codes.

GU2 = 2.73
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42 (M6 only)

gillbot, I'm not saying you're wrong about your car coming with a steel shaft (hey, I learn something new everyday) but have you checked it to be sure (does a magnet stick to it?)

I see,like you said Colonel, we learn something new every day. Speaking of DS,eversince I changed to 3:73's from 3:23's, I get these high vibrations above 140mph from DS; (ALUM 3' stock).
Should I go with Lingenfelter 3.5' balanced alum OR carbon fiber?
difference in price is $300 VS $700+.

Well it's covered with rust and heavy as crap. It's definately a steel one. I can take pics of it if you prefer. I yanked it shortly after I got the car and replaced it with a Lingenfelter 3.5" Aluminum one. I was told ALL 2.73 geared cars regardless of tires got the steel shaft.
