Default TC lock up problem, need help please

Hi all!

I have a new 422 iron block installed.
236/240 601/608 114LSA cam.

I also did a be cool and a cooler thermostat.
I have a built FLP LEVEL IV tranny with vaccum modile for the shifts, sincwe
three years now.

Now I have the problem that my Torque Converter doesn`t lock up most of the
time.

My question:

Does the lock up somehow relate to coolant temps????
It really seems to me, it does.

I ask that because it`s very cold outside now and the be cool and thermostat
let the water go down to
154°F on the highway.....and the TC doesn`t lock up.

When I came home after 2 hours of no lock up, the last minute of driving I
had about 180 water temp and the TC suddely locked up.

Also when I do a stop during highway driving, and the coolant gets warner,
then the TC does lock up for a while.....and it seems to me as soon as I gat
on the highway again and the coolant goes back to 1540F the TC looses the
lock up again.

It will be warmer outside this weekend and getting warmer and warmer outside
and I also will put in a 180°F thermostat instead of the 160°, but just wanted
to know if it can be that the measurements of the coolant temp. decides if
the TC does lock up or not......

BTW; my TC did never lock up the first few minutes when I had my stock
engine in, so it really may be it waits that the coolant has wrmed up to get
the lockup.

It sure is PCM related as I can lock up the TC with my lockup switch without
any problem.

BTW, I don´t get any misfire codes.......

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Michael

You need to mess with the misfire stuff via LS1 Edit. I don't know how to do it but ask in the pcm section, I think you need to set the misfire detection to a higher number.

I had this problem for years and I would clear the misfire codes from the pcm and then it would lock right up...

I don´t get misfire codes, so I doubt that is it.

I just did a search and found out that the PCM seems to look at operating temps (coolant) bevore allowing the TC to lock up.

So it seems that indeed my 154° on the highway were too cold, letting the PCM think I have not yet reached operating temp, thus not letting the TC lock up.

I think that may be it.

We get warmer weather this weekend, we´ll see if the TC locks up when the water gets 180°.

Thanks, Michael

I had lock up problems not to long ago. I spoke with someone from yank and they told me there was a 157 degree Switch that did not allow it to loock up when trans temp was below that.

Oh 154F sounds too cold, you need to fix that.

Today I tried out to clear not existing codes....
I cleared the PCM codes (although there weren´t any) and the TC locked up the same second.
It lost the lock up again when I came back into town........
So it seems to be the misfires.

No wonder with a 236/240 601/608 cam I think, right??????

I see about up to 70 at idle and up to about 30 at cruising (about 2000 rpms) at the current misfire
table on Autotap ...... is that normal?

I don´t see any misfires in the misfire history table, though????? Why ????

So what tables do I need to desensice on LS1 edit and how do I do it.

Also, is there a way to check if the misfires are from the cam or real misfires??

I don´t want to damage my new engine because of just ignoring misfires.

I don´t get any codes though.
Real misfires would set a code right?

Anyway , how can I check fro real or cam related misfires??

Thanks, Michael

Who did your pcm?

With that big cam you are probably getting some misfires or what the pcm is reporting as misfires... I used to do that too. I think when you clear everything it clears the misfire history and then it locks up.

Ask in the pcm section for instructions regarding how you need to configure that table.

I need to do my PCM program myself as I live in Austria (Europe).
I´m a bit allone here what depends on that, but I always find a way on the forums.

I did set the idle by cyl, low rpm by cyl and low rpm tables to 32000 and the TC locks up perfect now.

I though I could get away without doing that because I didn´t get a code.........

However, now it works!!!

Thanks,
Michael

BTW, is it normal that O2´s on bank 1 and 2 differ up to 4% sometimes??
I had -3.2 Bank 1 and 0,8 bank 2 during cruising.... just wondering......

2000 rpm seems a bit high to be getting a lot of misfires. I'd test and make sure they are random.

Log misfires by cylinder and make sure that they are fairly random and not occuring on just one or two cylinders.
