They most certainly did. Some of us were around to buy them brand new in 98-02. My 02 SS convertible stickered at $39K. Most WS6s, Firehawks, and highly options SS's were in the $30s
I mean damn, just because they aren't worth anything today, doesn't mean they didn't cost a lot new

You can't compare apples to apples because the 5th gen comes with more options. You couldn't get onstar, 9 speaker sound system, heated seats, DIC or HID's on any 4th gen. The 4th gen option list was pretty sparce in 02. Similarly equiped, they are pretty close in price.

You can't compare prices from 8 model years ago to today's pricing. All of this stuff bundled up into a $30-35K 2010 Camaro is a great value. Just the build quality alone will be worth it. 4th gens were designed almost 20 years ago, in the late 80s. Manufacturing processes and all sorts of things have improved since then.

My buddy bought his 02 Z 6-speed for just under 26K, I dont think GMs in any position to overloading Camaros with too much. Onstar, Blue tooth?! Not a good idea in my opinion. They need to offer way more of cloth interior, few power options, just simple good ext. looks and a fast motor. You can cook your hot pockets when you get home. You dont need to while youre driving lol!

Some people want that now. And yes there are plenty of us that don't need blue tooth or onstar but those both could be considered safety features. As far as the leather I don't see why so many people want cloth over leather. If you are unhappy with the price don't buy one. Fourth gen LS1's were actually a pretty good deal when you think about it.

You see, its not that I wouldnt buy one because I didnt like the price, its that I couldnt because of the price should it be over 28K for a base V8. Thats the whole idea. Camaros are not a rich person cars nor have they ever been. Let the "richy riches" buy the Corvettes and the Special Edition Camaros. And if they didnt like it then let them have the option to not buy one rather than it be the ones who do want one but cant afford it.

You get what you pay for and from what I can tell the new Camaro is a great deal. Is it cheap? No. Do you get alot of value for the money? Yes. People seem to forget that the 4th gens were not cheap either, but we all seem to think they were worth the money. I think once the new Camaro comes out and we can all go sit in one and drive it everyone will understand what a good value the new Camaro is.

What are you comparing this price against? The prices of all vehicles have gone up due to inflation over the years. You know how people always want pay raises? That goes into the price of the car (for labor to make the car, and labor for the materials on the car). If you are comparing it to the Vette, you're looking at the base V8 Camaro coming in right around $30K and the base Vette coming in at $48.5K (per Chevy.com). Looks like the Camaro is still the "poor man's" option.

Please dont start the labor argument crap I beg you! Not today. Im with UAW Leadership and Im trying to steer clear because it just turns into a political view argument thats based on bull crap. Honestly, I just priced out a brand new UAW built 2007 Monte Carlo SS 1 1/2 years ago for $26,195. I assure you if they really put their minds to it to build a low cost V8 Camaro they could do it with little trouble.
And if you are really trying to compare a Monte Carlo SS from 2007's model year to the new Camaro, you are really missing the boat.

Actually it is mostly cost of materials, gas, food, etc. The average American is making comparable wages to 2001, adjusted for inflation. This might not hold true for union jobs.
