2010 Camaro SS: 0-60 in 4.6 seconds
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — GM engineers at today's official 2010 Chevrolet Camaro unveil were all too willing to provide performance numbers for their hot, new muscle car, including quarter-mile and 0-60-mph times.
Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM's North American rear-wheel-drive platform and owner of a first-generation Camaro convertible, was pleased to run through his baby's accomplishments.
According to Oppenheiser, the new 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6-equipped Camaro will run from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of transmission choice. The V6 coupe will cover the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph. The brakes don't sound quite as impressive, though, as Oppenheiser said the base Camaro stops from 60 to zero mph in 132 feet.
Not surprisingly, the V8-equipped Camaro SS delivers better numbers across the board. Chevy's Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. "We optimized the shift points," he said.
Both versions of the V8 Camaro SS pull a maximum 0.90 g on the skid pad. Four-piston Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro SS in 117 feet.
What this means to you: If Chevrolet's numbers pan out, the Camaro SS will be every bit as fast as the Dodge Challenger SRT8 for a lot less money. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

wow, the new ss' are as fast as a 98 z....
they shouldnt have made it so heavy, it would be much faster.. those are sad times for an ls3.. especially in the NEW camaros.. since thats what were doing with stock fbodys right now....
i just HOPE those are low numbers.. i hope they can get in the 12s on average with deceant drivers...

haha i can still win lmao. i dont think i would ever buy a new challenger. i was at the dealer today talking to a friend who is a salesman and there was a silver srt8 challenger and the me its ok but the camaro looks much better. the challenger had cheap fake carbon fiber interior pieces and fake carbon fiber stripes on the hood. it is a huge car in person it looks bigger than my 4 door mercedes e500 lol.

The six bangers are what surprises me. These things will be snagging 13s with a couple bolt-ons and a tune.
My '98 matched the Super Sports 13.4 with a lid and hacked off muffler, but 4mph slower. Not impressive right now, but think of how restrictive drive-by-wire torque management is. These cars ought to routinely hit 12s with a tune.
My main complaint is that the IRS should be optional. I like the idea of simplicity when it comes to a Camaro.

What were GMs advertised times for the LS1 4thgens? Pretty sure it was well over 5 sec 0-60...
I'm thinking advertised numbers vs advertised numbers the new SS will look pretty good. Course I may be mistaken...

haha...that would be cool.
im just going to bide my time and take the flaming from the mustang crowd and haters about these advertised numbers until some real world numbers start to show up. they will be 12's. plenty of mags had the ls1 cars at 13.6 to 13.8. z28 cars were advertised from gm at a 5.3 zero to 60.
this car is plenty fast and has an ls3 under the hood. plenty of potential. and personally i think it is one hell of a good looking car to boot
i know i will be buying one as soon as I can.

here are some of what people had to say about the 4th gens performance when it came out.
http://www.camaroz28.com/98camaro/page2.html
not as fast as his lt1
http://www.phy.duke.edu/~hartley/iroc/z28vs911.html
a 13.8 for one car and a 13.5 for another...shows the accuracy here already. 5.2 and 5.0 zero to 60
http://www.thebiglot.com/reviews/199...UPE_REVIEW.asp
heres a nice 14 flat claim
you guys getting the point yet? this is nothing new at all. for advertised numbers they are looking pretty good.
this always happens...nothing new
and if i remember correctly ss and firehawks were advertised as 4.9 and the z28/formula at 5.3 0-60. and when in fact a stripper z28 or formula is the fastest ls1 to buy. advertised numbers are crap
the new camaro auto came in at a 4.6 0-60 (faster than a 4th gen)...once again im not worried. they are having some type of launching problem. probably the torque management thing people are talking about. 20 more horsepower and less drivetrain loss will not be slower if it can be launched correctly. the manual should be low 4 second 0-60. that is very respectable.
I plan on modding my car...so I will take care of that when the time comes. doesnt bother me
