Exciting news. The performance of the gen 5 Camaro is rather impressive given it's weight and size. I am looking forward to some pretty impressive handling numbers. Given the higher ceiling of the 6 gen due to reduced weight and improved chassis design, I would be very curious to see how a 1LE and Z28 type package would stack up against much more expensive competition.

http://autoweek.com/article/car-news...ops-200-pounds here's another
Who called it?
Surprisingly, people are keeping rather quiet. You know this is killing some though, as they have been talking for seemingly forever about the upcoming 3,400 lb 6th gen. Perhaps the few of us who kept saying to expect a 3,700ish lb SS got to them after all. Perhaps they're still soaking in their anger, sadness... or whatever. I called 3,700, but didn't think I'd have it exact, so this thing will have to be +- 10 lb. Of course, I've suggested a few scenarios. 3700 was just the last I remember. I guessed further off for my F150... that bad boy's HEAVY!
It will be a seriously strong performer, but some always expect more.

Well that's still good news, since that would mean the new 6th gen Camaro would weigh less than a equally equipted new Mustang GT ! So dropping 200 lbs. is like getting a 23hp increase at the flywheel with figuring 430fwhp, and dropping the weight of a 3900 lbs. vehicle down 200 lbs. to 3700 lbs.. .
Then there's other benefits like better braking, an better ride quality since slightly less spring rate is need in the suspension.

Well by God, you surely know more than GM!
There's no chance the scale you used is wrong and perhaps GM's is... perhaps they're just trying to make the world feel bad...
Chevrolet isn't claiming that the next Camaro will weigh more than 200 lb less than that 1 Camaro "Johnnystock" purchased many years ago.
Going by your claim though, the next Camaro WILL WEIGH 3,580 lb or less!!! There. Do you feel better now? I sure do and I will go on the record that the next V6 Camaro will likely be right in that zone. Thinking the next base SS will be under 3,600 lb, however, is just wishful thinking. If it happens, AWESOME. If not, we're all going to be stunned, now that you've told us... sheesh.
Why can't you just believe what the manufacturer tells us? Does GM just lie about this stuff to give you reason to argue?

Well yes, but ... also with the 1SS to 1SS.
I really don't doubt that Chevy got this thing 200 lb lighter in total base form. That is, unless the new base SS includes things like push button start, 8" NAV screen, power front seats and HD radio. Going to that length, they'll have serious trouble w/ a 200 lb drop.
That said, I'm kinda not gonna be surprised if it weighs right @ 3,740 lb in base SS form. I won't worry over that either... 30-40 lb less is... cute, at best. It's not going to make or break the car.
