according to most people the 0w30 GC is more like a 0w40. My last oil change I filled up with the GC 0w30 and my motor started making noises, especially the lifters. I wasnt very happy about it so I tried Pennzoil Platnium 10w30 and the noises stopped. I guess it doesn't work well for everyone ?? I will be trying the Amsoil next time around.

Well I'm gonna be honest guys, after seven or eight pages I just kind of get tired of reading. I've always used 5w-30 Mobile 1. My car has never burned it, or used more than a pint or so between changes. I change the oil every 2k or at least try to. I've never gone more than 3100 on one change. What I have noticed is that I can change the oil, and a week later the mobile looks just as dirty as the stuff I just drained. Now I know the purpose of the oil is to reduce friction, absorb and disipate heat, create seals, cushion, clean, and protect against corrosion. That being said, the oil after use should be dirty because it suspends all the contaimanents within it. However, after a week, 171k miles on the motor, and not a single mechanical problem, its hard for me to believe the engine is that dirty. I just put in a cam and rockers in, and resealed the oil pan. No sludge was found and it seems to be doing its job. With the price of it though and as often as I change it I'm curious to know if I would just be better off using something such as pennzoil platinuim. I can get the platinuim and a filter with tax for cheaper than the mobile 1 before I even pick it up off the shelf. Maybe I don't need to change anything and I just need to continue what I'm doing but I'm open to suggestion on if the 15 bucks I'd be saving would benifit me or just hurt me. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Ah, the age-old pointless debate.

I'll mix it up a little: What about the new Castrol Edge? It passed the same tests and has just as many certifications if not more than Mobil 1?

I read an analysis somewhere, dont remember where. Penzoil Platinum was one of the highest on the list for off the shelf stuff, mobile was was pretty good too. RP did really bad. The best oils where not available without special order etc. so I just use the penzoil platinum.

I use napa gold filter for pickup trucks. It's a lot bigger & filters better IMO. It does hang down just a tad below the oil pan.

lol, another oil thread. i read somewhere that rp eats seals in the motor and doesnt actually make any extra horsepower, (i read it on the intermaweb so it has to be true!) but anyway i use amsoil in the motor and rp gear oil.

Listen a couple of years ago Truckin' did a test on Royal Purple. They took a 89 3500 crew cab 4x4 454 big block and did a baseline dyno run. They then changed the rear diff fluid with Royal Purple Diff. fluid, the tranny fluid with RP, and the oil with RP. They gained 13 hp at the rear wheels in a dualie!!!! Think of the drivetrain loss in power a dually sucks up! Now use this stuff in a f-body or vette I think the drivetrain losses would be less and you should gain more. I just actually yesterday changed my tranny fluid with the RP synchromax Manny Trans fluid, the differential with the 75w-90 RP diff fluid, and the oil with RP 10w-30 (its in my DD S-10 with a 4 cyl) and a RP oil filter. My instant SOTP meter said I had more power and not only that my truck felt like it took off easier and if there was no rolling resistance to be felt. Im sold on that the stuff works. Period.

The reason you heard lifter noises after changing your oil is because that 0w is SOOOOO light weight that if you had any slight motor or lifter noise before a lighter weight oil doesn't weigh the "ticking" lifter down enough so it ticks louder. You put a heavier weight in there and since it is thicker it coats the lifters more reducing the noise from the valvetrain. If you wanted to continue to run the 0w-30 GC I'd try adding a Lucas oil additive such as the regular ol' Lucas Oil Stabilizer (I've used and stood behind this stuff for noisy, oil burning engines for over 6 years) but I use their new stuff called pure synthetic oil stabilizer it works really well with all pure high performance synthetics that are going to be run hard. If you were to use the 0w-30 and add a quart of the pure synthetic in there also I don't think you'd ever hear a lifter noise again and your motor would benefit then from the lighter weight oil by being able to rap up a little quicker from not having to use a heavier oil just to cover the noise up. Give these items a thought they work. BTW the lucas additives can be used in noisy diffs, trannys, and even if they aren't noisy it really helps by making the rolling resistance less.

I used to be sold on the RP stuff- **** I was a die hard. Now that I have looked over oil analysis, and over on the site bobistheoilguy.com I have come to the conclusion there is not much difference between RP and the synthetic stuff you can buy at walmart.

Schaffers, Penn, Amsoil, and even Rotella- yes thats right a diesel oil have great results in an oil anlysis, and perform.
