Default Penzoil Platinum

I didn't know where to post this, so if it's in the wrong place, I apologize. Is Penzoil Platinum fully synthetic any good? Reason why I'm asking, is because I changed my oil and used Penzoil Platinum, before I even hit 2,800 miles, the oil light came on. I checked my oil, it wasn't low, but it was pretty black for 2,800 miles. I get on it everyday, but still, no other oil has done this before, So I'm going back to Mobil 1 fully Synthetic. I tried Penzoil Platinum out because a lot of people said good things about it on here, but no more Penzoil Platinum for me.

Dumbass, it's not the oil. That's one of the best oils there are. You need to reset the thing. You have to hold down on the trip odometer button for like 5 seconds IIRC after each change or it will come on every day. I think that's how you reset it. It's in the stickies.

Dumbass? Who you calling a dumbass, dumbass, lol. I reset my thing every single time I change my oil. But it doesn't matter, it seems like my car runs better on Mobil 1 Synthetic. I've tried to use German Castrol, because everybody says that's good, but we don't carry it anywhere I live.

I don't think it would go black if you don't reset the oil light. I ALWAYS forget to reset my light and my oils fine.

The black **** is all the crap the mobil one was leaving behind.
I've kept Pennzoil Platinum in my car for 5000 miles only to have it come out medium brown.

I always thought pennzoil was junk. So what's the deal with Mobil1? Did they really go down the ******* after the exxon/mobile thing?

Yep. It is now derived from a group III base stock which is not synthetic. It has synthetic additives so the courts ruled they can still claim it is synth.

Not sure what PP is derived from but GC is a group four base and true synth.

Both of those oils do an outstanding job of doing the things that oils do.

Neither is junk. Neither is the best oil in the world. They are both simply good oils.

Oil life monitors don't care what kind of oil is in the engine. They will light up when the time in service, engine temp, rpm, and whatever else it takes into account, is reached.

At 5k miles it doesn't much matter what you put in your car if it's a stock engine on a pretty normal car. Built motors, supercharged and turbo'd motors, and motors that are treated badly could use a synthetic oil. Extended oil changes (7,500 and beyond) could use synthetic oil.

Modern oils have come a long way, and 3k mile oil changes are no longer the norm for modern engines.

If you love your car(s) and all the other toys with IC engines, you would do well to learn about oil and not simply repeat old sayings and ideas. You'd be surprised how wrong most of them are.

I used to be a rep. for Shell Lubricants/ Sopus Products who engineer Pennzoil Platinum, Q, and Rotella oils.

PP is also group 3 base, Mobile switched to the 3 base because R&D discovered that highly engineered type 3 synthetics can match the performance or exceed that of the true synthetics, and they can do that for a lower manufacturing cost.

Also, 4 and 5 base stock oils have a nasty habit of dropping their additive packages around 4500 miles while type 3 synthetics tend to carry the package and dirt and contaminants in suspenssion well above 5k.

I have PP in my car right now. I cleaned the carbon from the heads while the motor was apart decently...not putting a ton of effort into it.

My oil has over 3k miles on it and it's still clean and gold. Looks like what I would expect from an oil with a couple hundred miles on it.

I'm still running the walmart supertech full synthetic in mine with wix filters. Looks just like every other oil when I change it at 5k.

CORRECT!

Clean oil isnt a good sign unless it gets cleaner over time. That means its leaving the crap behind... in your lifters and oil passages etc

Listen. The oil light isn't coming on because the car magically thinks the oil is no good.
