I say 6K is a great deal for it...Looks very clean - Bring cash with you (Money Talks)
And they are not going to give you anything for your car - you be better of selling it yourself...

I found my 98 Z28 for $700, so if you look around you will eventually find one hell of a deal....All it needed was a waterpump, plus I drove it home......

Aren't the newer LS1s usually the ones burning oil and such? I never really see that happening with the '98 models. Not a biggie, but the '98 temp gauge isn't a dummy and actually works. They did have their differences, qwerks, but even a few advantages over some of the later years. My one and only complaint is the different PCM. If you get a real tune, that's not a problem.

The little variances shouldn't deter you from picking up a '98.

Here's the differences. I think there's a link here, but I found this one first.

Well my Dad is pretty against me buying it. Couple reasons:

1) "It is a Camaro" apparently he's got it in his head that after the trouble I've had with my V6 and my bro's old 3rd gens he had that all Camaros are just fun but totally unreliable cars disregard the fact that my V6 was abused previously and my bro's old 3rd gens were hardly in great shape either.

2) I don't really have a good job right now. I have my job on campus which easily pays my monthly payment on the car but that ends in May when I graduate. So if I buy this Z28 I wouldn't have much money left for car payments and/or repairs (with 100k I'm sure it has a few wear-related items it'll need either now or soon). If I hang onto my V6, I have my entire tax return to pay car payments for the next year in case I can't get a job right away (especially with today's economy). He suggests hanging onto my V6 camaro until I get a good full-time job, then look into replacing it - not with a Camaro but with "good reliable transportation" (going back to #1 again ). Told him if I didn't get a Camaro it would probably be a 4x4 blazer/trailblazer or something for the time being and flat-out refuse to buy an import.

If you can't realistically afford it, why bother? However, say you could. Do you need pop's approval to get another car?

Just for perspective, I sold my 1999 Z28, auto, bolt ons, 116k miles for $6,600. It was extremely clean.

Technically, theoretically, I could afford it. However, would it be wiser to hang onto the money for now because of the job situation? Also knowing there may be things that need repaired due to the age and miles.

As far as Dad's approval, well not necessarily, but his input is valuable since he's obviously been through more than I have and bought/sold more cars than I have.

Hand held tuners aren't worth much anyway. And any '98 can be custom tuned the same as a '99+, at a decent shop. Perimeter bolt valve covers don't make any difference, and the '99-'00 cars have EGR + LS1 intake as well.

'98s are not "notorious" for any of these issues really. I don't know of any oiling problems with the block. The rod bolts aren't going to be an issue unless you're spinning higher than the stock rev limiter, in which case these bolts can be upgraded.

My '98 is a slightly better built car than my '02. Not that the '02 is bad at all, but it does have that common piston slap issue (my '98 does not), and the newer models do seem to have more issues with burning oil.

My '02 Z28 has 86k miles with no significant failures or breakages ever. I'm the second owner, and looking over the car's records it's really only needed basic wear items to be replaced (brakes, belts, etc.). Most major repairs were an alternator and A/C compressor clutch, both near the 80k mile mark. This car has been rock solid otherwise. I'd drive it coast to coast tomorrow if I needed to.

Is there any way to find out who the previous owner was? Would be good to contact him and just ask about the car (why he traded it in, any issues he knew about, etc).

If you end up buying it and can sneak a peak of the title before you get it switched to your name it will have the last owners name and address.

As far as the car goes I would offer them 5K cash. If they take it then fine, if not then it's not the end of the world. Whether or not you can afford it is something you'll have to figure out.

You are aware that a4's are very easy to find at those prices right? If it was a m6 that would be a good deal but it isnt. A 98 a4 with that many miles at that price is no great bargain, thats a normal price dude.

Well might as well end this anyway... I had done some miscalculations and there is no way to swing 6k right now.

Thanks anyway for your input guys.

I wouldn't sweat it, these cars aren't hard to find for relatively cheap
