noisy ls1 after lucas
Well I recently bought my z28 it had a oil leak from the main seal so I put some lucas stop leak aka mud in JUST to get home. I noticed as I started to drive the car home though that the lifters would start to tick bad upon first start and were audible while driving for about 5 min. After they were fine let the car sit for 10 min theyd start again but go away after a few seconds. I had to drive the car 200 miles to get it home over that time the lifters did get quieter but not all gone. The lady who I got it from only drove the car like3k this year so i wasnt used much and along with that lucas it might be most of this noise. My question is are all these motors a little noisy? My friends z had 58k on it this one around 100k and his is till audible from underneath the car just a little quiter. When I get the seal done I'm definetley adding seafoam to the oil then driving for 50 mi and fluishing hopefully that will help. Im thinking the lifter is sticky from sludge because it goes away a collapsed lifter doesnt get any better after driving right?
Thanks Dan

Yup thats what Ive heard it just scared me a bit cuz I could hear it on take off from a light but then it would go away.I'm gonna try seadoam and use some thinner oil next change time. Definatley not a rod knock tho from the osunds Ive heard from motors with spun bearings.

Dont be alarmed by the gauge reading, as long as it isnt bottomed out and moves up when the rpms go up its all good.. With the exception of the tach and speedo the stock gauges are not very acurate

I got the lifters to quiet down a lot with the seafoam and it turned ok oil black within a hundred mi. so I drained it and to do a small flush I just filled the engine with 10w 40 advance parts brand oil. The lifters are noisier than with the seafoam idk what wt was in there before but I think this tap could be due partly to the cheap *** oil. The lifter noise does quiet pretty quickly now though. So in a couple days Ill replace the oil with actual god oil. Question is what wt do ya think is best? ive always used 10w40 but idk abt this one, any brands or wt's favorite besides amsoil for noisy lifters. Amsoil is rare to find anywhere where I live.

One more thing after doing some research it seems valvoline or chevron delco is a good choice for conventional oil, the motor has 100k so I wanna stay away from synthetic. Ive read some people run 15w40 Im in south fl and its HOT right now... or should i go with 10w40 which is what it taps with however however its cheap **** oil .

no reason 10w30 wouldn't be okay in florida also... btw. 10w40 may quiet the lifters down some, but it will also (ever so slightly) decrease efficiency of the car.
my car just passed 100k... running full synthetic just fine still.
you're gonna get a few people in here to tell you to go GERMAN castrol 0w30... some to say 10w40 mobil 1... since the 10w30 isn't as good anymore... amsoil and royal purple also have huge followings in several weights. enjoy!

RP 10w-40. I use 10w-30 in my dd S-10 and they are notorious for lifter tap which mine does. I had run Valvoline Max-Life in the previous motor in the truck and that queited it down a lot. The RP is just a little louder tap at cold idle but goes away at operating temps and is much more efficient than the Valvoline.

Ok gm recommends a 30 weight oil, so why not use it a 40 weight doesn't protect as well because bearing clearances are for a 30 weight oil and your oil temp goes up which heat is the enemy. 40 weight won't flow as well and things aren't get lubercated properly. Even a high mileage engine ppl put thicker in but with a the correct oil psi mite not be as high but it is flowing properly and lubercation like it is suppose to. Myself I use 0w30 sso amsoil additve package in that oil is great and have less valvetrain noise because it getting lubercated fast and provideing oil film on parts quicker
