Default Why are Gen III camshafts so expensive?

So I could buy a new cam for a SBC and pay less than $150. But i have a Gen III, so i have to pay almost $400 for the same thing. Just wondering why this is. Does it have anything to do with the fact that ours are Hydraulic Rollers?

Its because genIII engines are so technologically advanced that it cost 3 to 4 times as much to grind a GenIII cam...

i believe bc its a billet piece made from a solid chuck of steel as opposed to a cast piece in the SBC?? I think its the mfg that makes it cost so much.

Supply and demand is also at play here. GenI has been around since 65 so the supply is unlimited whereas GenIII is the new kid on the block relatively speaking so the prices are higher. I too have often wondered if that justifies a doubling of the price though.

Prices are high because the suppliers know we will pay it. Its like everyone says, you have to pay to play. For example the fast intake setup, is there really even close to a thousand dollars worth of cost in those intakes...LOL

Thats crap, then gen 3 isn't new anymore, and there's TONS of them out there getting built/modded every day.

There are billet steel cam's available for Gen 1's and 2's also...and they still don't cost as much.

D-Webz hit the nail on the head.

Default deep pockets

You can buy a nice catback for a 4th gen f-body for 400 bucks. You scroll down and see basically the same thing for a corvette or viper for twice as much...lol.

like d-webz said, simply put: they know well pay it. now if a sponsor ehre started offering everyday pricing on cams at say $300, they might lose ~$90 on every cam, but theyd sell so many so fast, that they really wouldnt care.
