Default Need car choosing help -My bro wrecked my Dads car, now we need help shopping

As the title says, the other night my brother was driving home from the local fair they have every year. It was very foggy out and the roads were very slick from a prior rain, as he was about to start going around a turn he hit the brakes, they locked up and he slid into the gaurdrail. Both airbags deployed, the tie rod snapped the drivers wheel off, obvious frame and tweaked front end damage, smashed bumper, lights, etc. Car is totalled. Everyone in the car is fine though, everyone walked around with not a scratch thank God.

Alright so all in all the point of this thread is because we now need a new car, we are looking to spend $12,000 tops and looking at slightly used cars. Nothing too old, early 2000s at the oldest is probably it, and not a ton of miles. My Dad is starting to look at used Mitsubishi Galants and V6 Impalas, nothing cool at all. I keep trying to explain to him that you can easily find nice cars, for that price. So im asking you guys to help me find some nice, decent, respectable car for my Dad to drive on a budget. He is a very hard worker and deseves something nothing, not some boring *** POS Galant.

EDIT: Might help mentioning where to look lol. For search about 35 miles outside ZIP 18353.

What kind of car does he really want? Does he want a fun car, a family car, one that can be either?

How many doors? Is 4 required?

Interested in trucks or SUVs?

We are looking for cars. 4 door most likely. No trucks or SUVs as we already have an SUV. I am trying to get him into something "luxuary." Hence the Jaguars, Benz, and Cadillac I posted. The car that was wrecked was an 05 Dodge Neon so something nicer than that.

I'd say get a 04 grand prix GTP. Nice looking car IMO and can be fun to drive, silver or black and some nice black rims.

I would highly recommend an Impala. I have a 2001 Impala and I love it for a daily driver. It is very roomy, comfortable, and rides great. Seems like a high-quality car for the money. Grand Prix is also nice, and you can usually find them only a couple years old w/around 30K miles for about $12K.

Exactly what I was thinking. Reliable powertrain, looks good for a 4 door, well optioned, and runs well for a larger family car. Look at some of the Bonnevilles too.

GTP is a good idea, he is now currently looking at a Charger. a V6 Charger but IMO still better than a Galant lol.

Default Impala or Malibu

My sis has a Malibu and 0 problems with 150K on the clock. Just brakes n struts. She's smacked a few things around and it's been repaired.

My cousin has an Impala. 0 problems for him also, though he has around 50K on the clock.

I know neither are fun or luxury but their usually pretty reasonable DD'ers..

My vote is Impala. Get the 3800 series V6 with the appearance package that gives you aluminum wheels and the little spoiler.

My mom had one when I was in the Navy. (maybe '01?) It was a nice highway cruiser and all around good car. The throttle programming was spot on, you gave it it gas and it went. It looked nice in a medium pewter color with a charcoal pinstripe and aluminum wheels and small spoiler. She actually got complements on it.

Now she has a Buick and regrets getting rid of the Impala.

Here's what her car looked like minus light window tint and pinstripe:

Does he want a car payment or trying to buy something outright?

12 g's would be a fat down payment on a used CTS-V and insurance for atleast 6 months if not a year depending on driving record.

That car is complete garbage compared to a GTP or Impala. My co-worker just got one and I'd much rather have my $6K 2001 Impala than her brand new $18K Lancer.
