I use the NAPA #1522 on three LS type engines - LM7 (5.3 truck), LS1, and a GM LSX block 427. It works great on all these. The only question I have is this: NAPA calls this their Gold Filter. Why then is the body of the filter black?

You already know the answer - it's Marketing 101. If it says "Gold" on the invoice you will pay the extra $0.50 per unit without protest.

Anybody have any pictures of the longer filter (51522) mounted?

I'd like to see how low it actually sits.

The K-member is still lower than the bottom of the long filter.

its only about half an inch or so below the oil pan you would hit other things before you hit the filter

The NAPA GOLD is manufactured by Wix for NAPA. Chew on that ya ankle biter!

Thanks, gentlemen.

I actually got to see this filter in person, on my brother's SS. It does hang a bit low, but as stated previously, it still sits higher than the K-member, so there should be no troubles with hanging up on anything.

When we changed the oil in his car and upgraded to the taller WIX filter, a month or so ago, we didn't add any more than the standard 5 1/2 Quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic. Dipstick read well above the full hash mark.

I'm not sure about the LS9 filter, but the filter for the LSA motor has a different thread size from all the other filters listed in this thread.

Wix now makes the 51522xp which they say is designed for full synthetic oil and for heavy duty use.

I run this on my '13 Silverado (5.3L LS Powerplant), and also on my '09 Chevy factory V8 Colorado (5.3L LS Powerplant)

Gen 4 motors have a different thread.

Dipstick read well above the full hash mark.
If it's above full, that means it's a little over filled.

I thought LS engines took 6 quarts?
Both of my LS engines take 6 quarts so

My car takes 6 quarts with the WIX 51522 and that places the oil level right at the top of the hashmark.
