Don't ever assume anything....
Well...... I read a thread the other day that got me thinking. The thread stated that SOM didn't come out til 2001 IIRC and my first thought was no effin way. Hell one BIG reason I bought my car was because I loved that color and wanted a SOM T/A!
Well today at work I had some free time and did a little searching and sure enough I have a RPO 96U.... Cayenne Red Metallic car! SOM cars are RPO 71U.... The colors are so close that I have met two guys with SOM cars at local tracks who have come up to me and talked to me because they thought I was in the SOM fraternity when they saw my car. I noticed my car was slightly darker in color when parked next to them but it was so close we all assumed it was just a normal difference in batches of paint... It is still a beautiful car and this in no way diminishes that fact but really surprised me. Guess I need to change my name now lol..
And BTW the Camaros this color were called Monterey Maroon Metallic or according to some Medium Red Metallic but I have never seen a Camaro this color I don't think. Gordon on here and a couple guys on other forums call it Maple Red Metallic but anyway just thought I would share this info....

Monterey Maroon Metallic is not the same color, this is a darker red, and is the Chevy version of Maple Red Metallic (pontiac).
In 1998, your color was called Red-Orange Metallic (pontiac), and Cayenne Red Metallic for Camaro.
I've got all the dealer brochures from most of these years, that's my source for this info.
PS. There were about a dozen SOM cars released at the end of 2000, but good luck finding one. It was only an "official" color for 2001 & 2002.

my car is cayenne red metallic ans rpm was6 is correct it was cayenne red for camaros and red orange for ta's.
every one who takes a look at my car at a show or at the track thinks my car is som or they think its custom.
i did look up the build #'s on my car and from what i remember there was around 400 cayenne red camaros is 98 and my car is a z28 a4 tan leather interior 3:23 rear so my guess is that my car has a very low build # maybe in the 100 or so range but it dont get that detailed so i will never know.
here is some pics.

What year is that car? Montery Maroon Metallic (Camaro)/Maple Red Metallic (Firebird) didn't appear on the F-body color option list until 2000. 44U is the code GM has listed for both of these colors.

The Camaro White Book doesn't break it down by engine size but below is the build info for the Cayenne camaro's in 1998. The color ran from 1996 to 1998.
1788 - Coupes
126 - Verts
1914 - total

Medium Red Metallic was never a name used for LS1 F-body colors, but it's very likely that other GM models using this same exact color code just called it that instead.

I think I discussed this before on another thread. Monterrey Maroon, is the same color as Medium Red.... Regardless what they "called" it on the Fbody, I tried to get them to pull Monterrey Maroon by name and they couldn't find it, so I told them the RPO, and they said Medium Red Metallic is what its called in their book that lists Medium Red Metallic as a color on the 2002 Camaro....
This is the paint SELLER not the painters...... I was going to re-paint it myself..
So I'm aware that its called Monterrey Maroon Metallic, thats not how you find it when pulling the codes, it comes up Medium Red Metallic.

well when i first got my car i needed some touch up paint and i could not get it from the dealer and duplicolor had it but it was a different paint code but the same name and it matches perfectly.
i had some basf chromealusion paint made for my car at a auto body store and they had a few different shades of cayenne red which is a little wierd but we pulled it up by paint code (wa122b) but they also used a little camera and took a pic of the paint just to make shure.
