Thumbs up 28mpg in an a4 convertible!

Just took a trip from NYC to VA in my '01 Full exhaust ls1.

I averaged about 28mpg with mix of spirited driving, few miles of 55mph, but mostly it was one on cruise control at 75mph.

It answered a question that always bugged me, since in nyc i managed 17 in the city and 20 with mix of city/highway. I always wanted to know how would my car do on an actual highway.

I got 28 in my Ttop car from Tulsa to OKC and back on Route 66 including some downtown OKC driving. My friend only got 21mpg in her v6 Dodge Magnum and she took the turnpike as well as less in town driving. These cars sure get good mileage when you keep your foot out of it.

That is very good for the A4. I have never done better than 25 mpg on a highway trip. A 6 speed is a different story with many geting 28, even 30 mpg. Amazing, isn't it? Who needs a hybrid?

yea man. i surprised myself when i did the calculation.

i figured i 'd be lucky to get 25 since the convertible is probably 100-200lbs heavier than a hard or ttop.

i wonder what gears are in my car.

If it's not a WS6, probably 2.73. I have those in my car, I hate them around town or at the track, but I love them on the highway!

Thumbs up

I picked up our firehawk from the prev owner in Indiana and drove it back over a two day drive, like you I managed almost 30 mpgs @ 70+ mph with and without the top up, makes you wonder how a 10 year old big muscle car can get that when newer cars today don't get much better...

A4 with 3.23 rear here. It was an option on mine and it is not a WS6.

With stock rear and M6 I got over 30 mpg at 65 mph with my 2000 T/A when it was new; it's fallen off a bit since I put 4.10's on it. I shift 10 mph sooner now, and have to ride at 55 mph for maximum mileage, DOH!

28 mpg on the highway in the ole 6-speed LT1 here, and around 16-17 mpg around town. Not bad for a 16 year old OBD1 car with what is basically a truck motor!

I used to get 20-21 in my LT1 TA with 70% hwy mileage. that was with it running very rich and a couple other codes. got 25 coming home with it after the purchase with my foot to the floor half the drive (100+ mph)

I average 25-28mpg in my A4 with about 75% highway driving. One time I was telling someone that some 6 speed LS1s can get 30mpg on the highway and he just laughed and basically looked at me like I was retarded. He drives an RX-8

As cool as rotary engines may be, they haven't come far since the days of the 1300cc turbocharged motor in the FD RX-7s that had the thirst of a big block. Even the RX-8's NA motor is a gas hog. I believe the EPA rates them at 24 mpg highway / 15 mpg city or thereabouts. On the other hand, f-bodies have regularly gotten 30+ mpg since the late 80s when the cars got tuned port injection. Your friend needs to look up EPA ratings for f-bodies and C5 Corvettes - they're officially classified as LEVs (Low Emission Vehicles).

weight has little to do with actual gas mileage once your actually moving at a consistent speed, it only affects initial acceleration which would be too small to calculate....don't believe me, watch myth busters.. lol

True, but a heavy car would matter if the car is driven in mostly stop & go traffic or city blocks.

I got almost 32 MPG with the cruise set @ 80 mph(M6) going to Chattanooga from Atlanta and then back.My WS6 was/is stock.,except for the wheels and tires. It was the first long commute I took in the car 3 years ago.I turned 4000 miles on the odometer on that trip.My wife and I were very shocked to say the least.
