Free Mod Gains
#22
You know when I first got my 98 there wasn't but 1 paperback book out about the LS1 motors. This was before the LS2s were put in the GTOs. About the 2nd or 3rd chapter of the book they showed you the free mods and descreening the MAF was listed so I did it. Never had no troubles from it. But about a year later everbodys jumping on the leave the MAF alone bandwagon and I was wondering if I did the right thing. I'm glad to see somebody actually tested a before and after. Now I don't feel so bad.

I was debating on doing it to my Formula, but never did.
I had done it years ago on my '88 GTA with the L98, and never had any problems. Can't say there were any gains from it, but it was in the TPIS handbook, LOL, so I did it.

The throttle body doesn't open all the way stock. The butterfly blade is a little at an angle that impedes air flow. If you grind down the bumpstop on the throttle body, it will allow the blade to open up all the way. Its usually included by most guys that do port and polishes for Throttle bodies.
If I remember correctly, Pontiac did this back in the muscle car era with the GTO. The GTO wasn't allowed to have more horsepower than the Vette so Pontiac either put a really big bump stop or a screw or something to hinder the throttle body from opening all the way. It cut down on horsepower quite a bit. People figured it out and either removed the screw or cut that bump stop and it opened up like 20hp or something.

this is false information. at the shop i work at we've done multiple dyno tests back to back screened maf vs descreened maf and every single time it will pick up anywhere from 3 to 6 hp at the tires time and time again and that is fact. the only purpose of the screen is to straighten the air out going into the maf IF there are turns in front of it but most intake setups out there are a straight shot into the maf and then make turns after the maf. so if there are no turns in front of your maf descreen it and you will pick up a bit of power.

Wow I can't believe I'm the only one on here who thinks free mods are a waste of time. I've seen dyno sheets fluctuate, with the same car and setup, as much as free mods will get you. The only one I've seen thats worth anything is grinding the throttle stop, and porting the throttle body if its DIY.
Just my $0.02
And descreening the MAF on a street car = not a good idea. Thats a fact. Its not even a good idea on a race car unless your doing your own tuning.

I remember pulling my lid apart one night to do the free ram air mod only to find it all already been done. I ditched the A.I.R, E.G.R. and did the coolant bypass mod to pass time on a boring afternoon. It's fun to tinker for the hell of it, but decent gains are always a welcomed plus.

I descreened my MAF out of boredom one night.
I would do a lot more free mods just to kill some time but there are not too many for my car.
